Surname Gaudiosi

Postby gailee1 » 10 Jun 2010, 15:06

I have just discovered what appears to be my husband's great grandmother. The ship transcript from 1898 for the Trojan Prince lists FILOMENA GAUDIOSI as a passenger traveling alone to visit her son LEONE (my husband's maternal grandfather) in NYC. She lists COLLIANO, ITALY as her last residence. GAUDIOSI appears to be her married name (transcript lists her as married); however, we have no idea who her husband may have been. She apparently was born around 1854-1859 and her age is listed as 46 on the ship's transcript. We do not know if she was born in Colliano; we don't know when she married. It is very possible that LEONE was an illegitimate child of FILOMENA. We would very much like to discover FILOMENA's maiden name, place of birth, parents' names, husband's name, marriage date, etc. Can anyone help me or advise me as to the next step in our search. Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum!
Gaudiosi should be her maiden name.
In Italy women keep their father's surnames.
She would not be travelling under her husband's name (unless she was travelling with him, listed as 'wife Filomena')
If she stayed in the US most likely she would adopt the custom of using her husband's surname.
Hope this helps clear some things up.

If her last place of residence was her birth & marriage location, you can write to Colliano for her records:

Valerie: Thank you SO much. We weren't aware of the custom of women retaining their father's last name. Any ideas where or how I can find any other info regarding Filomena? Websites (preferably free) in the Colliano, Italy or whertever. I have tried a few sites (Church of Latter Day Saints Rootsweb (which sends you to Ancestry.com-I no longer have a membership with them). There must be other websites; I just don't know where to find them! Again, many, many thanks.

It appears that the LDS hasn't filmed Colliano (yet), Writing to Colliano for her birth and marriage record is free (the comune will advise you if there is a fee for copying records)
I may have added the address to my first post while you were typing.

You may be able to find an earlier manifest
According to Filomena's 1898 manifest she was in NY from 1894-1897
Nice to have, but it may not have much more information - maybe travelling with family?
