Di Benedetto or Failla from Licodea Eubea, Sicily, Italy

Postby sabbyfioretti » 11 Jun 2010, 12:35

Hi Guys. I'm new to this site
Have started doing my family tree. Can anyone out there help me.
My grandfather was Carmelo Di Benedetto, born in Licodea Eubea in 1890. He married my grandmother, Sebastiana Failla also born in Licodea Eubea in 1897. They went to New York separately and were married in 1915. Found Ellis Island information about their arrival in USA and their marriage, but have come to a standstill.
I know that my grandfather had a brother by the name of Mario, who went to USA- but dont know anything else. My grandfather died in 1938 in Italy, when my dad was 2 yrs old - so he cant really help me.
My grandmother had 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Any information about them would be appreciated.

You can write to Licodia Eubea for your grandfather's birth and death records. You should write in Italian. Here is a site to help you generate the letter in Italian.

http://circolocalabrese.org/resources/l ... civile.asp

Here is the address of the Town Hall...

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Garibaldi, 3

Did you order this marriage record from NYC Vital Records?
Often the witnesses were siblings if available.
Also will have the names of parents and birth place.
The #6655 is the Certificate number. They were married in Manhattan.

Failla Sebastiana Feb 28 1915 6655 Manhattan
DiBenedetto Carmelo Feb 28 1915 Manhattan 6655

You can order online from this site for about $12 - 15.00

could one of Sebastiana's brothers be "Salvatore Failla?"

Here is a manifest for Carmelo DiBenedetto arriving NY 21 September 1920. Leaving wife Sebastiana Failla in Licodia, going to brother-in-law Salvatore Failla on Elizabeth St., NYC.

There is a good chance that this Carmelo was not in USA for the 1920 Census.

Hi,giuseppe

Cordiali saluti, Cathy

My great-grandmother was Giovanna Fialla born about 1870 in Licodia Eubea. She had seven brothers so their family nickname was "family of the week." Other names in my genealogy are DiMartino "family of the red-heads" and DiPietro "family of carob eaters," the Nanfaro, Spinello and Caruso families, all of Licodia Eubea. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know. Best Regards, Cathy

Ciao. Best Regards, Cathy

Hi Cathy. I rang my father who told me that as far as he knows, his mum did not have a sister called Giovanna. Unless she was my grandmothers cousin or aunty. My grandmother, Sebastiana was born in 1897 and you said that Giovanna was born in 1870 - that would make her 27 years old when my grandmother was born.
The funny thing is that my grandmothers oldest sister, Guiseppina, (I believe born in 1893 or 1894)was married to a Caruso. And my grandmothers younger sister, Caterina married a Di Pietro who lost his eye in World War 1. They lived in USA and Caterina died in the 1970s there. I dont know if we have a family connection - Is any of this familiar to you? It would be nice if it was.
I found out that my grandmother, Sebastiana, sopranome was Marrana and her husband, my grandfather, Carmelo Di Benedetto's sopranome wasw Tizaliti.
By the way I live in Melbourne, Australia - where are you from?
Many thanks

Hello Cathy, if the nickname was "Simana" maybe we're related, but I can not be sure, unfortunately my parents, grandparents and uncles died. With the family Di Martino remember a relatedness, but with the Di Pietro no, I've never heard of.The only thing I can do is ask to a cousin of mine who lives in Australia (she is a Failla),if he remembers any of your relatives and let you know. This response translated into English by the translator, and I do not know how is faithful to the Italian, so I put the answer in Italian.take this opportunity to get the best wishes for a happy new year. Sincerely,Giuseppe

Cordiali saluti,Giuseppe

Re: Di Benedetto or Failla from Licodea Eubea, Sicily, Italy

Greetings,

Sorry for the repeated messages - I am new on this forum. I
am from New Jersey, USA.

What I have are the stories of my husband's father and grandmother
about Licodia Eubea. The families arrived in New York in the early
1900's and lived on Elizabeth Street and Mott Street in Little Italy,
New York City. There is a Society of Licodia Eubea there still.

He said there were seven FIALLA brothers and one sister, Giovanna.
That is why they were called the family of the week. He also
said they were very strict about naming the first son after the
father's father; the second son afther the mother's father; the
first daughter after the father's mother and the second daughter
was named after the mother's mother. Perhaps Giovanna and her
brothers are the generation before the parents of our 1890's
born relatives?

I am making my best guesses as my father's stories got confusing with
all the FAILLA family connections to the SPINELLI, CARUSO, DiMARTINO,
GIACHI, NANFRO, CASCIO and FALCONE families.

I think my oldest Fialla was Emmanuel or Santo FAILLA. He married
Santa SPINELLI (born 1870) having at least a son, Salvatore, and a
daughter, Guiseppa (born 1894)

Guiseppa FIALLA married first to Antonino NANFRO having son Guiseppe
and daughter Angela (born 12 Mar 1890 - my family) She married
second to Salvatore SPINELLO having sons, Gaetano (born 1911),Guiseppe
(born 1916) and Salvatore and a daughter Rose.

Angela NANFRO married Vincenzo DiPIETRO (son of Carmello DiPIETRO
and Antonia DiMARTINO) in Licodia Eubea and moved to New York City.

There is a story that the FIALLA, SPINELLO and DiPIETRO cousins got
together on the day before Mussolini's draft. They ate so many
oranges that they looked, acted and felt very sick. When they arrived
in that condition, the army would not take them.

Another story mentions an aunt who lost an arm in the war and stayed in
Sicily. Her name was Fran or Rose.

Here are some other family groups I am related to but am not sure
how. All of them are born in Licodia Eubea....

Sebastiano FIALLA having a daughter, Maria (born 1893) who married
Guiseppe MANNUZA. Their sons were Vincenzo (born 1909) and
Sebastiano (born 1912)

Salvatore FIALLA born 30 Mar 1888 with wife and three children in NYC.

Nunzio FIALLA born 10 Nov 1890 Licodia Eubea.

Salvatore FIALLA born 17 Mar 1874 with wife Angela.

Guiseppe FAILLA born 19 Mar 1879, gets mail as Guiseppe FAILLA di Biaggio

Mario FIALLA born 17 Jul 1878, closest relative listed is Maria FIALLA.

Anna FIALLA born circa 1885 going to brother-in-law Salvatore FALCONE

Domenico FIALLA born circa 1891, son of Gaetano FIALLA & Giovanna GIACCHI?
Gaetano FIALLA born circa 1862 arrives in NYC four months after his son.

Guiseppa FIALLA born circa 1893, daughter of Emmanuele FIALLA, going
to brother Salvatore NUNZIA.

Gaetano FIALLA born circa 1883 going to cousin Vincenzo FIALLA

Gaetano FIALLA born circa 1863 going to nephew Guiseppe SCACCO.

I hope some of these are helpful or of interest. Please let me
know if anything might connect with your lines.

Happy New Year,
Cathy
