Prospero Pellettieri parents

Postby chrisdamato » 13 Jun 2010, 00:15

I just recently received a death certificate for my great grand aunt's husband Prospero. It lists his parents as Joseph Pellettieri and Maria Pellettieri. As with many of my ancestors, people married within family, so it gets very confusing. I tried to look up any information on Joseph and Maria, but found nothing. Interestingly, I have Prospero's 1910 census and it lists his mother living with him. However, the name is Zabella, not Maria. I assume that's short for Isabella, but I have nothing else to go on.

I know it's not his mother-in-law, because I have her name already.

Please help.

Death records are not very reliable. Accuracy depends on what the informant actually knows...

How can we help? :-)

Suanj, do you think this could be a mistake on the census record, and Isabella (48) should have been listed as "mother" not "sister"? At age 48, she could easily be the mother of Isabele and Prospin (Prospero). Only, would she name her daughter after herself?

Also, one thing worth noting, is his [Prospero] daughter's name is Marie (possibly named after the Maria on his death record). Do you think maybe Isabella was a stepmother?

I know not if Isabella was a stepmother...... she by 1910 and 1900 census result immigrated in 1893... and because Prospero and Maria Carmela Pellettieri immigrated in 1897

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Maria Carmela Pelletier
Name: Maria Carmela Pelletier
Arrival Date: 5 Apr 1897
Birth Year: abt 1878
Age: 19

Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Furst Bismarck
line 6

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Prospero Pelletieri
Name: Prospero Pelletieri
Arrival Date: 5 Apr 1897
Birth Year: abt 1874

Age: 23
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Furst Bismarck
line 5
both final destination New York

as a well the young Isabella:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Isabella Pelletieri
Name: Isabella Pelletieri
Arrival Date: 5 Apr 1897
Birth Year: abt 1882
Age: 15

Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Furst Bismarck
line 4
final destination Cleveland; no more infos, but by WWI draft registration card:

Name: Prospero Pelletiere
Birth: 17 Sep 1873

Residence: Manhattan, New York, New York
Other: Manhattan City

he was born in Potenza area, I believe Laurenzana and in effects in Laurenzana in 21 sep 1873 was born a Prospero Pellettieri son of unknown father and of Maria Gaetana Pellettieri, single woman, unmarried

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/5922 ... ribirt.jpg

In 1897 this Prospero Pellettieri, shoemaker (son of Maria Gaetana Pellettieri and of unknown father) married at Maria Carmela Salvatore Pellettieri ( daughter of Vincenzo Salvatore and Maria Teresa Laraia); the marriage in Laurenzana, date 21 feb 1897

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/6850/p ... ge21fe.jpg

so I believe that they are your ancestors and maybe Isabella sr was a aunt
( maybe...?)
abt Isabella jr, I found a birth Maria Isabella Pellettieri born in Laurenzana

21 Jul 1881 daughter of Vincenzo Pellettieri and Maria Teresa Laraia;
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/448/ ... ribirt.jpg

so the young Isabella was the sister of Maria Carmela Pellettieri and no the sister of Prospero... most probably Prospero and Maria Carmela was cousin in some way.... and married...

Suanj,

You have provided a great deal of information. Let me filter through it and see what I can make sense of. Vincenzo and Maria Teresa are my great great grandparents. I know they had a daughter Isabella, as well as Maria Carmela and my great grandmother Rocca.

Can you please tell me where you were able to get all of the information on Prospero's birth and his marriage to Maria Carmela? I would love to have access to that for my other ancestors.

Chris

By ancestry.com in this database:
Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, Civil Registration Records, 1861-1938 (in Italian)
choose "Potenza" ,choose locality" Laurenzana" and then you choose the record type...
all the best,

Suanj,

I went into the Ancestry.com website, but I'm not sure where those databases are found. Which dropdown menu are you using? Is it the "Search" dropdown or the "Collaborate" dropdown?

Ok, found it. However, I don't know where I'm supposed to enter the individual's name that I'm looking for. It only asks for Location and Keyword. I tried entering the last name in the keyword box, but it didn't work.

you must make the search in year Index ( indice Annuale) of births ( Nascite)or marriages ( Matrimoni) or deaths ( Morti), in the year that you think probable...

if you find the name that you are searching for, it are also the number of act near the name;
so after this search in the index,
you choose : Atti di Nascita" if you search the birth,
or "Atti di Matrimonio" if you search the marriage
or "Atti di Morte" if you search the death,
and choose the year where you found the name in the index...
then by number of act you can go in the page where the original record is....
it is no possible to make a normal search, because the records are not transcribed... almost for now...

Please excuse my inability to get this done properly. I guess I'm just not doing it the right way. I selected card catalog, then entered Potenza, then was asked for a year. I entered 1870 and it brought up a whole bunch of listings. None of these listings are arranged by name. I'm currently looking in the marriage records for Laurenzana for the year 1870. However, there are 47 pages and I'm going through them one by one.

Is that how you found Prospero or is there something I'm missing?

No names appear in any index.

chris
-then you entering in Potenza,
-you must select the locality ( Laurenzana)
-and the record type (Indice annuale Matrimoni)
-and the year( 1870) and it are only 3 pages of names arranged in alphabetical order:
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view. ... 2864-00049

when you find the right spouse's names and number act, you make so:

Potenza>Laurenzana>Atti di Matrimonio> 1870
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view. ... 2864-00001

and it are 47 pages;

- knowing that in 1 complete page it are 2 marriages, at second of what is the number of act that you are searching for,
for exemple act#18 it must be abt in 14th or 15th page,( with exclusion of book cover etc..)
so you put 14 in the page box and search and move back or forward,

until you will find the act number that you are searching for...

when you found it you read also the spouse's names in the bottom, and after you can save the document on your pc..
