Festa, Vincenzo

Postby Gina15 » 10 Jul 2010, 19:30

Hello,
I'm trying to find out about my Grandfather's parents (my Great Grandparents), and his siblings. What are their names, date of birth, marriage date? When did he (my Grandfather) and his parents, siblings come to the US from Italy? I have tried to find information using the Manifests, but I am not sure which information is correct. (On the Ellis Island site, I searched my Grandfather and there are two listed with the same name & birthdate. How do you determine which is the correct one? How do you connect all the information?)

I am new at searching. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Gina

Here is some information about my Grandfather that I know is correct:

Thank you for the update Gina.
What were his children's names? (if he followed tradition 1st son and 1st daughter were named after his parents)

Without more clues we may not be able to place Vincenzo on a ship manifest or census (yet  ).

Since he had a social security number you could order his social security application for $27. It will have his parent's names and place of birth.

How do I know when he came over? I searched the Ellis Island site using his birth date and there was two listed with the same name and birth date. I did not see anything noted on those.

Hey Gina

You're right, we don't know when he came over.
Looked at your two manifests, neither one looks correct.
One of his names is probably mis-spelled or transcribed incorrectly
(it's not in Boston or Phila manifests either)

We'll keep looking
Since he naturalized in 1955 - there should be a notation on his manifest.
(If the manifest was found when he applied for citizenship)

Gina,

Are there any family stories about when he came over. For example, was he a child or an adult? Was it before or after WWI? Did his parents immigrate? Did he always use the name Vincent or was he called James or something else? Did anyone ever talk about any place in Italy he might be from?

Hello Misbris,
Sorry, I don't know any of this information. But, I do remember my Grandfather called Jimmy sometimes. I always wondered about that? And I am surprised you mention this!

Many Vincenzos become James in the US. I don't know why, but it is very common. I couldn't find a census for him under Vincenzo so I'll try James.

Could this possibly be him?
Name: James Festa
Home in 1930: Brooklyn, Kings, New York
View Map
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1910
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Vincent
Mother's Name: Mariann
Race: White

If so, his father Vincenzo immigrated in 1893 and he immigrated around 1911.
