Giovanni (John) Casale

Postby jbcleere » 24 Jul 2010, 17:58

Greetings, I am looking for information on my Great-grandfather Giovanni (John) Casale.

He was born in Abruzzi Italy abt 1879. He shows up on the 1910 census as John Baptist Casale and on the 1920 census as Giovanni Casale. According to both US census he immigrated to USA in 1893.
His wife's name is Antoinette Sabbatino born in New York City.

I would like to know who his parents were. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
...John

The family was on Withers Street, but it seems to say "moved" in the margin.

John, age 27, a merchant grocer;
1905 census shows him as being in U.S. for 13 years.
Antonia, age 21, housework
Louis, 5
Cono, 3

The problem here is, with an 1893 immigration date and an 1899 naturalization, it is unlikely that we are going to find a document which lists his place of birth as anything more substantial than simply "Italy".

I have never seen the given name "Gruvam" before; I assume this is his correct name as it is on the naturalization index record...

I am looking at the WWI draft registration card which gives his date of birth as Nov 17, 1878. Can you see that one Laura?

The family was at 158 Withers Street in Brooklyn. Gives his place of birth as Salerno, Italy, but we know that is a problem

If the 1905 NYS census is the correct family, they were on Withers Street in Bklyn. Maybe G.B. Casale wasn't born in Abruzzi, as John believes.

What about this 13 june 1893 arrival manifest?
Same arrival date on the naturalization document!

G.B (sure for Giovanni Battista) Cassale, age 17 , travelling with his mother Maria Grazia Sabattino, age 52, going to Brooklyn?:

That's an interesting find, Laura, but no town name that I see on the manifest. It does seem to match the naturalization card though.
