looking for G3 grandfather

Postby imcalamar » 24 Jul 2010, 23:25

Can anyone help? My G Grandfather was Giacomo Ventimiglia born 1872.
Lived in Balestrate, was married to Marie Antonia Bommarito. Immigrated to U.S. around 1913. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and Welcome :-)

Do you have US records? We can start with that...

A few other details might help. Where in US did he live? What were the names of children, if any. Occupation?

Is this your Giacomo?

If it is, he immigrated before 1913 - this manifest is for 1907.
Line 8...
Giacomo Ventimiglia, 34, from Balestrato, going to brother-in-law Salvatore Bommarito, 754 Biddle St., St. Louis, Missouri...

Here are images for both Giacomo (Jack) and Luigi (Louis) Ventimiglia's Naturalization index cards. They contain numbers you may need to reference if you request Naturalization records for either or both.

I'm not sure if Giacomo was born in Balestrate, However I have Luigi's birth certificate, he was born in Balestrate.
Giacomo's birthday was 11/24/1872 I dont know if he had any siblings, or his parents names.
Is it possible that the records are incorrect??

I've answered your PM :-)

When you say that Giacomo was born 11/24/1872, what was the source for this information? Some US documents are not reliable/accurate for information. One of those would be the death certificate since the information was not provided by the deceased, but rather by whomever was available. The Naturalization Index Card above lists his birthdate as 11/28/1872. Not so far off... :-)

One way to find out the actual birthdate for Giacomo would be to locate his actual birth record. You have a good lead with Balestrate, so why not write to the comune and request both his and Maria's. There is no cost.
You will need to write in Italian. Provide a self-addressed UNSTAMPED envelope with your request. The following links will help...

Thank you for the help, I mis quoted the birth day, it is 11/28/1872. This came from his headstone. The death certificate is not available to me at this time, but I am working on getting a copy. I am sending a letter to Balestrate for the birth records, thank you again
