Pelella Family from Caserta Italy.

Postby budlight1951 » 30 Jul 2010, 23:11

I'm working on my family tree both for myself and my wife's family. My wife's Grandfather was born Jan 1 1892 and lived in Caserta Italy. His Italian name is Biaggio Pelella or it could have been Braigo Pelella. He died here in the U.S. in 1955. he was married to a Anna Crisci who was born 1898 and died here in the U.S. in 1970. I am trying to obtain information on his father who I believe his name to be Luigi Pelella. The name Pelella was sometimes spelled Pahalo or Palella. I would love to find out more about his father but I am new to this family tree finding people if any one can help or have suggetions for me please let me know. It would be so great if I could find some of my wife's relative alive in Caserta.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

First Name: Biagio
Last Name: Pelello
Ethnicity: Italian South
Last Place of Residence: S. Maria Vico, Caserta
Date of Arrival: Jun 22, 1909
Age at Arrival: 17y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Berlin
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0009

This seems to be his passenger list info which you may already have. On the manifest, it also shows S. Maria Vico, Caserta as his place of birth.

The following is the official website for that town:

http://www.comune.santa-maria-a-vico.ce.it/

You may be able to write away for a copy of his birth record since you have his actual date of birth. If you ask for an Estratto per Riassunto Per Atto di Nascita, that document should give you the names of both of his parents, including his mother's name.

You can request the document from the town's anagrage-just by including a self-addressed, but NOT stamped, envelope.

I am still looking for a mailing address or even an email address for the town. The email or letter needs to be written in Italian.

Since he died in 1955, you may be able to get a copy of his death certificate from NYS which may have his parents' names on it.

Hello and welcome! :-)

You can request Biaggio's Social Securty Application for a fee. It will list his parents' names (including mother's maiden name) and his place of birth.
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWe ... t/main.jsp

You can also do some of the search yourself at your local LDS Family History Center. They have microflims for Santa Maria Vico, Caserta from 1809 - 1929. That includes birth (nati), death (morte), and marriage (matrimoni) records.
Here is the listing:

You can locate your nearest FHC center by entering your zip code at this site:

Do you have this 1930 Census?

Listing is for Willilam B Pelelle and wife Anna at 207 Broadway in Newburgh, NY, with 9 children... He is a shoemaker...

Could be that the "B" is for Biagio...and he took an americanized first name.

At the time of the WWI Registration it looks like all the brothers lived in Newburgh, NY, and all were shoemakers.

Here is the WWI Reg card for Natale (Maurizio Natale Pelella) born 1888 in Santa Maria a Vico.

Here is WWI Reg card for Giovanni (now John Pelella) born 1890
