Di Maio/DeMaio Family from Naples, Napoli, Campania, Italy

Postby bdemaio12 » 01 Aug 2010, 00:49

Hello, I am looking for more information on Lorenz and Jane DeMaio, I have a 1920 US Census for them but can not find them before or after that. The Census shows that they immigrated in 1895 from Naples, Napoli, Campania, Italy. If anyone can help with this please respond.

Additional information would be helpful.

Where were they residing in 1920? Their years of birth (or ages in 1920)? Children's names and ages?

Sorry, This is the information I have:

Lorenz DeMaio b. abt 1874
Jane DeMaio b. abt 1878
Ernest DeMaio b. abt 1905

All born in Naples, Italy

Louis DeMaio b. Mar. 19, 1908 d. Oct. 29, 1972 in Paterson Ward 11, Passaic, NJ, USA

They were all living on Vreeland Ave as far as the 1920 Census recrods go.

Unfortunately this is the only information I have.

As far as familiarizing myself with Italian Genalogy I have been working on this for 4 years, if I am not familiar with the process now I do not think I will ever be.

Here is the 1910 census, from ancestry . com:

1910 United States Federal Census about Luigi Dimaio
Name: Luigi Dimaio
Age in 1910: 2
Estimated birth year: abt 1908
Birthplace: New Jersey
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Eugenis
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Name: Lorenza
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Lodi, Bergen, New Jersey
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Eugenis Dimaio 30
Lorenza Dimaio 34
Eanest Dimaio 5
Luigi Dimaio 2

Jane is listed here as Eugenis, probably a misspelling of the Italian Eugenia. Lorenza should of course be Lorenzo. The children, Ernest and Louis tie in to the 1920 census. Give me a few minutes and I will post the image...

Wait, If what you are saying is correct about the spellings of the names then accourding to your deductions then Jane(Eugenia) is Male and Lorenz(Lorenzo) is Female.

One thing you can be certain of when it comes to censuses of our Italian ancestors, is that the names will be completely screwed up. Believe me, we see it over and over and over again.

Just to give you a simple example, my paternal grandfather's first name was Giuseppe. It took me forever to find their 1920 Hoboken, NJ census; I finally had to search the entire census for the area they lived in to locate them. His first name had been perverted into the family name "Jessup" and his surname became some crazy first name. The rest of the famioly was listed under the surname Jessup.

These people did not speak or understand English but they did the best they could to answer the questions put to them. Meanwhile, the census takers knew very little about Italian names, could not tell the difference between common first names and surnames, did not understand the tell-tale differences between masculine and feminie spellings, etc.

The 1910 census is your family; just the names are a bit mixed up. :)

On the other hand, it is possible that her name was Lorenza and his was Eugenio...

I assume you know from other means which is correct (Lorenzo/Eugenia vs. Eugenio/Lorenza)?

ERNEST DEMAIO 30 Jul 1904 Sep 1969 65 07502 (Paterson, Passaic, NJ) (none specified) New Jersey 143-09-5755

This may be your Ernest Demaio in the social security index available at www.rootsweb.com

You can order his application for his ss card for $27 which will give you his parents' names and place of birth. Naples is a province as well as a city. So you need to find the exact place of birth and, if he was in fact born in Italy, his town of birth should appear on his application for his social security card. To the left of his name in the index, under the word tools, the left icon will generate a letter to mail with his info to get his application from social security.

The application can also be ordered online using a credit card.

For online ordering www.ssa.gov/foia/html/..._guide.htm

I would suggest that you do not use Vital Check to send for the record, as I know some people on this forum have had problems getting records from this company.
