Carmine Cornacchia

Postby ToniD8236 » 11 Aug 2010, 18:43

I'm hoping to find out more information about the Cornacchia family on my maternal side.

What I know is that my great grandfather, Carmine Cornacchia, was from Villa Latina and married Rose (I do not know her surname). Carmine and Rose lived in Detroit briefly until his early, tragic death. They had three children - Grace (now Grace Desilets), Anthony (my grandfather, Anthony Cornacchia), and Mario - who all settled in Leominster, MA.

My grandfather, Anthony, had seven children so I have a lot of cousins who are interested in learning more about our heritage! I would really appreciate any help or advice anyone could provide on discovering more of my family history. Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum!
We'll be happy to see what we can do to help.
Just a few questions
Abt when was your g-grandfather born?
Do you have your family's US records (census, military registration, ship manifests)?
Are you interested in assistance with how to conduct research in Villa Latina?
Thank you, Valarie

Valerie,
Thank you so much!! That is definitely my family! I know that Carmine Cornacchia was born in Michigan and died in Leominster, MA and that their daughter Grace (Crescenza) emigrated to the U.S. with her mother at a young age. I will be calling my Great Aunt Grace soon to find out if we have any further information regarding our family's records so we can hopefully learn more about the family. I cannot thank you enough for your help!

Valarie,
You've already filled in a lot of gaps in our family history! We'd be interested in finding out as much as possible about Rosa and Carmine Cornacchia. I've looked a bit into Rosa's side on FamilySearch, and it seems as though she was born to Felicis Cornacchia and Carolinae Rossi. If this is right, then do you know why/how it is that Rosa kept her maiden name (Cornacchia) when she married Carmine? How could this be?

I would love to find out more about Rosa and Carmine. I appreciate any insight you can share! Thanks!

I was typing while you were posting
Where did you find Rosa's parent's names?
Thanks, Valarie

Cornacchia family living next door to 1557 St Joseph Street, Detroit in 1930
(address on Carmine's 1926 manifest)
Is it possible that wife Rosa was a distant cousin of Carmine?
Her maiden name may have been Cornacchia - if their families both originated in Villa Latina, it would not have been unusual at all

I don't know how creditable it is, but I found Rosa's parents' names on a the Family Search Record Search website (http://search.labs.familysearch.org/). I just looked over the census you found and am wondering why Carmine's name wasn't listed on the census. Do you think his mother and father could be the Mary and Dominick Cornacchia listed? Again, I cannot thank you enough for all your help.

Carmine was in Leominster in 1930.
Mary may have been related to either Carmine or Rosa, so far the only link is the address in Detroit?

I would say there is an excellent chance that you found Rosa's birth record
Besides being the correct birth date, Carolina matches her mother's name from Rosa's 1928 ship manifest :D
Great Find!

Italian women keep their surname from birth all their lives. They are usually known as Rossi IN Cornacchia.

Thank you everyone for all the valuable information you have shared! It's fascinating reading the census for Felice Cornacchia; I've been trying to discover what connection there was to England and now I know that he worked in Surrey and later his wife gave birth to their daughters, Rosa and Maria, in England. I wish I could find a marriage certificate for Felice and Carolina (Carolinae?) Cornacchia to learn more about this line of the family.

Also, I'm trying to discover who Mary Cornacchia (b. abt 1886 in England) was married to. From your information, I've learned that she was widowed at the time of the 1930 U.S. Census. It would be fascinating to find out her husband's surname!

Thank you!
