Questions about baptism

Postby dixiecricket13 » 19 Aug 2010, 18:31

I have found in the Bisacquino baptismal record where Bernarda Milazzo was baptized on April 19, 1877. On her citizenship papers, she states that her birth date is April 15, 1875.

Is it realistic that she was 2 years old before she was baptized? Or do you think she has the year wrong in her paperwork?

Thanks!
Christina

I think it could be very likely...my father's baptism and birth certificate seem to have errors plus he was born in the house not a hospital so maybe records weren't as accurate back then...

for example:
his baptism says he was born in 1921 but he was born in 1922 and he was baptized in 1924.

Thanks for the advice. I am going off of my assumption, which is that everyone was baptized as soon as possible meaning it's possible she was born on the 15th and baptized on the 19th; but it would have been in the same year.

Maybe the first Bernarda died and the name was reused 2 years later.
It would be very unusual in 1875/7 for a child to go 2 years before being baptized. They might not have done the civil birth registration for 2 years (I have seen this) but baptism, I doubt it.

I can see your point if Bernarda said her birth date was 1877 but the baptismal record said 1875 but in this instance she stated on her citizenship papers that she was born in 1875; and the baptismal record says 1877.

I am being overly cautious about this point because the mother's last name on the baptismal record (Lanza) does not match the last name given for her mother on her, or her sister's, death certificate in the US (they both said Distefano or Destfina)

She may have had some reason for stating her age incorrectly.

Children under a certain age travel free on the ship maybe?
Children under a certain age may not travel unaccompanied.
May not work.
She may have requested a baptismal certificate for her marriage, the priest took the one of a dead sister born 2 years earlier. She is illiterate and didn't know.

Death records cannot be trusted. The person reporting the death is giving information by hearsay. They may be making assumptions based on incorrect information.

Thanks for the information. I am trying to figure out how to request a letter from the comune in Italian but because of the variance in the mother's surnames; I'm not having much luck.
