Help with Marano Family-New Rochelle, NY

Post by gemellua »

Trying to find out what town my aunt's family came from. Her name was Maria Marano (1893-1988). Her parents were: Pasquale Marano and Josephine ?. The 1910, 1920, & 1930 New Rochelle, NY census list Josephine's first name as Mary (news to me) and 3 different ages for her and Pasquale. I would like to know: Town in/around Naples Pasquale, Josephine, and daughter Mary were born, Josephine's maiden name. When they died, and where they are buried. Listed below is the information from the Census. I've checked with Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in New Rochelle. Their records are so bad that even if my aunt's family is buried there, they can't confirm it. Where can I look before having to contact NYS for their death records? Does anyone know if the death records would even list burial location? The ones I have for my grandparents (both died in Bronx NY 1947 & 51) did not list location.

I "think" I found Pasquale listed in the Castle Garden site. I couldn't find him on Ellis Island.

Also: See mention in 1930 Census of $52,000. What would that be referring to? I know Pasquale owned homes he rented out before 1930, some of his children lived in them after they married. Am I wrong to think one home at that time could not cost $52,000??

FYI: My Aunt Mary is not listed in Census because she married at 13 years old in New Rochelle City Hall. She lied on the marriage license. I do not have a 1910 New Rochelle Census for her and her husband Pietro "Peter" Randazzo. They were living at 109 River Street (one of Pasquale's homes) at the time with Pietro's brother Croce and his family. If someone could do a search for it, I would greatly appreciate their help.

Go back to ellisisland.org records and look for "sounds like", "alternate spelling" "close spelling" on top of the listing furnished for the Pasquale marano. Did the Pasquale Marano you found in Castle garden furnish you with a town name? =Peter=

Here's a neat site that has the instructions for the census questions
http://usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/tEnumInstr.shtml
141. Column 8. Value of home, if owned, or monthly rental, if rented.-If the house or apartment is owned, as indicated by the entry "O" in column 7, give in column 8, on the line for the head of the family, the current market value of the home as nearly as it can be ascertained. Unless the house has been recently purchased it will be necessary to estimate its value. The estimate should represent the amount for which the home, including such land as belongs to it, would sell under normal conditions-not at forced sale. The assessor's value, on which taxation is based, is not generally a safe guide, being usually below the market value. Make it clear to your informant that the values returned on the census schedule are not to be used in any way in connection with taxation and are not open to public inspection.
Also, if $52,000 is out of line for the neighborhood, could he have misunderstood the question?

If these are your Pasquale Marano's Naturalization Records, they should have his town of birth and arrival information:
from the Westchester County Archives
http://www.westchestergov.com/wcarchives/default.htm
MARANO PASQUALE Petition 1921 A-0019(35)S(Z3)
MARANO PASQUALE Declaration 1915 A-0008(20) 75

Hi Peter :D !
You never know which records may contain the needed clue
We've seen husband's naturalization records that list their wife's birth location and even son's WWI Draft Registration Cards that list where their father was born  .

If this is correct, it's a little closer to the actual date of immigration and may be more accurate

One of these MAY be the Social Security Death Index listing for your aunt Maria (Marano) Randazzo. The dates seem to be very close.

Social Security Death Index

Name: Maria Randazzo
SSN: 128-07-2032
Last Residence: 14621 Rochester, Monroe, New York, United States of America
Born: 8 Aug 1893
Died: Feb 1986

State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

Name: Maria A. Randazzo
SSN: 083-42-7985
Born: 1 Jun 1895
Died: 12 Dec 1988

State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1966)

Name: Mary Randazzo
SSN: 085-10-5530
Last Residence: 10460 Bronx, Bronx, New York, United States of America
Born: 18 Feb 1893
Died: 12 Jul 1988

State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

If one is your aunt (or if you know your aunt's SS#), you can request her SS application...which will give you her place of birth and parents' names. The fee for this is $27.

http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... t/main.jsp

The last listing...the zip code 10460 is a part of the Bronx which is VERY close to New Rochelle...

Keep in mind that death records are filed in the place that the person died, not where the person lived. That would include the location of the hospital, if that is where they died.
Possibility...
I found this listing in the NYCity death index. The year of birth seems right...
Kings County is Brooklyn.

Surname First Age Month Day Year Certificate # County
Marano Pasquale 68 y Jan 14 1948 1155 Kings

If you think this is Pasquale, you can send for this certificate...
All the death certificates I have (between 1905 and 1939) tell the cemetery and funeral home.

ADDED:
Possible death index listing for wife Mary (Josephine?)
Marano Mary 61 y Oct 22 1938 20571 Kings

Thank you once again everyone.

Joannsalvo:

This person listed on Find a Grave is not my Mary Marano.

Peter:

My Uncle Pietro and Aunt Mary are both buried in
St. Raymond’s (Bronx, NY) with their daughter Anna and
her husband Larry. In fact, they're a few feet from my parent's
and grandparents grave. I was told that their first son
Giuseppe (who died at birth) was buried in Holy Sepulcher
in New Rochelle, but since the records there are so screwed
up - the wonderful people at the office could not confirm this
for me! Please don't get me started with that office and the
caretaker at Beechmont Cemetery. All I'll say is they should be
ashamed of themselves

Suanj:

WOW-Thank you for the WW1 & WW2 Draft cards.
My cousin never mentioned his dad had filled these out.
Does anyone know if this was a mandatory thing for
all male Americans? My uncle did not serve in either war.
As I mentioned, Uncle Pietro’s younger sons enlisted
during WW2. BTW: All Pietro’s brothers became US citizens –
expect for Pietro. I know this for a fact because I went to
the Bronx court house and obtained copies of the petitions.
My cousin Joe also stated his dad never became a US citizen.
(Always thought it was weird since he never
wanted to go back to Sicily.)

As far as finding my aunt’s obituary – I think it highly unlikely.
I’m sure my cousins handled their mother’s death the same
way mine did for our parents. We contacted the family
members and friends of our parents personally. We didn’t
have their deaths printed in the papers. Also, requested the
hospital not give out this news to whatever news organizations
they dealt with.

With all the information you have provide, my next
action will be to request my uncle’s and aunt’s marriage certificate.
I don’t think being a great niece will allow me to request their death
certificates, but I can now ask for Aunt Mary’s parents death
certificates thanks to you!

A new question for you:

My grandfather and his brothers (Pietro included) owned an
ice business called Randazzo's. It was
located at 812 (I think that's the number. I know
it was eight hundred and...) Jackson Avenue, Bronx,
NY. Would there be a record for this business?
If so, would the same apply for Pasquale Marano's bar in
New Rochelle?

Oh suanj - Forgot to say thanks for the Ellis Island info. I do have all my
uncles' arrival info from Ellis. Wish I could say the same for one of their sisters. I have been having great difficult locating her once she landed in NY. It sucks that for a woman, once they married in the USA, if you don't know their married name you're screwed.
