looking for parents of C. Sturino

Postby tula » 24 Aug 2010, 05:01

Hi

I’ve be reading the posts here and I hope that someone can please help me. How would I go about confirming a theory that I have?

I am searching my late husband’s family for his grandfather's parents. His grandfather was from Cosenza, Italy and settled in Kenosha, WI. area, so I have access to obituaries and censuses. On my husband’s grandfather’s ( Costantino Sturino B: 16/09/1890 D; 20/01/1972), obituary, it states his father was named Salvatoro and no mother’s name. I must have been told by someone in the family, a long time ago and I don’t remember from where, that his mother was named Domenica.

Using the site:

http://88.59.143.158/ascs_web/consulta_ ... 3279F3761E

I located a couple named Salvatoro and Domenica (nee; Crispino) and it connects them to sons, Santo, Antonio (Anthony). Costantino had brothers Santo and Anthony mentioned on the obituary among other sibs, Louis (who died in Italy) , Frank, and Carmella Conforti. So, I suspect this couple could be his parents but I have no other proof. These names are very common in every family in Rende and I have different spellings of Costantino. The dates are possible, if this is correct there would be a 14 years difference between "older brother" Santo and Costantino. But Costantino is not mention in connection with the Sturino/Crispino branch anywhere like Family Search or Root Web, so I where could I go to find more proof. I can find no immigration information. Also, his obituary say he was discharged from the US military Dec, 1918, yet, I can find no evidence anywhere else of a service record. Can anyone steer me to other Italian sites that can help me in my search.

Also, what does it mean “enlistedâ€

Thank you so much, Suanj, that is more information than I expected! The definite birth date of brother, Antonio, and Constantino living with him would be the connection between the Sturinos and the Crispinos that I'm looking for. You helped me name the first generation in my children's family tree that died in Europe.

I honestly didn't think the actual ships manifest were available because I sure couldn't find any. Thank you so much for those. While no one ever mentioned to me of a first wife, it is possible, but more troubling to me is the daughter. There is an Aunt alive that I could ask but she is in her late eighties. And while I'm estranged from my husband's sisters, I talk to his cousins now and then. I'll have to ask them if they knew about a first wife and a daughter.

The birth date is wrong on the obituary but that doesn't surprise me. He never drove a car and never had a drivers license with a date on it so I think the children were guessing in the obituary. I've seen that before. I don't think my husband's parents paid too much attention to names of deceased and dates. When ever I asked them about older generations, they had no knowledge or said they couldn't remember and so I'm finding obituaries are notoriously wrong in information.

I'm impressed you found the Dattalo side which I didn't mention in the op. You are good. But it leads to more confusion because the obituary has the wedding date at March 4, 1921, yet Caroline didn't arrive in the U.S. until November of 1921. I do know the courtship between Caroline and Constantino consisted of sitting together in her sister's parlor. Funny how little bits of information can fall into place.

There is a great deal to think about here. This has all been very helpful.
looking for the names from Cosenza:Sturino. Ruffolo, Dattilo, Perri, Gentile,Crispino, Savaglio,Marino, Alfano, Molinaro, Bilotto and Bartella. And Padula,Buonomo,Bellizi from Brindisi.

Hi Tula,
I am pretty sure abt the data, so Costantino was married and had a daughter, remained in Italy with mother.... I know no if the wife died or if Costantino abandoned it....
abt the infos on the obituary, I believe no all right completely... you know Carolina arrived in nov 1921; no doubts that is the right person... so they married after this date....
all the best,
suanj
