oh yes, I know that you have the UK records; I replied just for to confirm abt Garzeno birthplace;
the Garzeno civil records starting from 1866, but your ancestor seeming born abt in 1855, by Uk certificate sent in Italy; it is also possible that Giovanni was born some year before of 1855, almost by my experience, the age of italians in UK is no very accurate... however if he married in Garzeno it is possible to find more; if he married in UK maybe registered the marriage in Garzeno also, but needing of to know more details for a search abt that

that would explain the loss of his birth details if the records started 1n 1866
unfortunately we do not have any records of his marriage but family members seem to think he was married twice

he had a sister in Garzeno as we have seen a letter from Pietro Merga weitten in english for his sister advising that the death should be registered in Italy to avoid fines of some sort but in the letter he only refers to her as mr fomasi"s sister

Thanks again for your help I shall continue to try and put together any information this end

Regards Chris ,,

Giovanni Fomasi married in 1884:
[hr]
Marriages 1884
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
FOMASI John Holborn 1b 1183

Type: Marriages Start date: Dec 1884 End date: Dec 1884
Volume: 1b Page: 1183

I now not the bride name, but only 2 women married in Holborn in same time: Ellen Butler and Susannah Sartlett Cooper
son one must be Giovanni wife...

---------------------------------------------------------------
children:
[hr]

Births Mar 1885
FOMASI Ellen Florence London C 1c 11

[hr]

Births Sep 1889
Fomasi John Peter London C. 1c 11

[hr]

Births Mar 1891
Fomasi William Joseph London C. 1c 10

[hr]

Births Mar 1893
Fomasi Violet Johanna London C. 1c 8

[hr]
maybe by marriage certificate you can know the Giovanni father name and by that could be possible a further search..

Hi Chris,

Although the Garzeno civil records (available through Ancestry) only go back to the 1860s, the parish records there go back to the 1600s. I was just there in June, and the parish priest helped me look up a few of my ancestors in the books. If you think Giovanni was born in Garzeno, you might try contacting Don Alberto Fasola at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Garzeno.

Good luck,
Jerry

by Garzeno deaths:

-FOMASI Pietro b. abt 1825 (father: Domenico, mother: Marta MAFFIA; husband of Giuditta PONCIA) death date: 5 feb 1892, 67 old; possible death record of Giovanni's father

-FOMASI Pietro b. abt 1811(father: Pietro, mother: Maddalena MAZZUCCHI; unmarried ) death date 1 feb 1881, 70 old; so it cannot be the Giovanni's father

-FOMASI Pietro b. abt 1831( father: Paolo; mother: Giovanna BORDESSA; husband of Giovanna MAZZUCCI) death date 28 jan 1891, 60 old; possible death record of Giovanni's father

-FOMASI Pietro b. abt 1842 ( father: Giovanni, mother: husband of Caterina POZZI) death date: 12 may 1872, 30 old; so it cannot be the Giovanni's father

-FOMASI Pietro death date 30 dec 1897, 7 days old; so it cannot be the Giovanni's father

-FOMASI Pietro Emanuele b. abt 1870 (father: Pietro; mother: Giovanna MAZZUCCHI) death date 9 dec 1870, 11 months old; so it cannot be the Giovanni's father

There is also:

-FOMASI Pietro b. abt 1821 (father: Paolo, mother: Giovanna BORDESSA; wife Giovanna MAZZUCCHI), death date 1 feb 1881 (record #10), 60 old

He is in my family tree by marriage, but I don't have a birthdate or marriage date for him. He had a daughter Anna, born about 1862, who married Giuseppe Antoni ALBINI, born about 1863.

Jerry
