Ducal family " de Foa" - Piedmont

Postby paul.gelardi » 31 Aug 2010, 19:51

I am intrigued by the following opening lines of my grandfathers memoirs:-

"My father was the scion of a ducal family (de Foa) from Piedmont. He ran away at 15 to enrol in the army being raised by Garibaldi to fight for the unity of Italy."

Has anyone heard of a ducal family of de Foa,.. or is this complete fiction. My granfathers birth cert records his fathers birth place as Brusnengo in 1830-1 but this is a small village in Piedmont and unlikely to be the home of a ducal family.

Does anyone have access to listings of Italian(? it sounds French) nobility and can confirm such a title existed?

Thanks for any help,
