Trayna from Italy lived in New York

Postby svenno » 26 Sep 2010, 15:30

My uncle Reidar Jansen was married to an italian girl, Marie Anna Trayna, b. April 12, 1906 in New York, d. Dec. 1981 New York. I have found her and her family in US Census 1920 and 1930. Fathers name was William Trayna b. abt 1880 in Italy, mothers name J. Giatania or Gantani b. abt. 1888 in Italy. Children William (Bill), Mary, Jack and May all born in Brooklyn. I know nothing about this family. Can anyone help me locate them? Where did they go?

suanji

The Vito Traina you found may be the same person as William. I know a lot of Italians with the first name Vito have been called Willie (a nickname for William, here in the U.S.). My father had an Uncle Vito whom everyone called Uncle Willie.

The English equivalent of the Italian first name Guglielmo is actually William.

Thank you for interesting replies!
It looks like Vito Traina and William Trayna is the same person. The marriage in 1903 does match the birth of their first child William or Bill who was born probably in 1904 (US Census 1920 says he is 15 years). And that Vito also is called William in english could indicate this is the same person. Any suggestions on how to trace ancestors in Italy and decendants in USA would be appreciated.

Hi,
I know that William is Guglielmo, but nobody Guglielmo Traina came in USA, almost I no found...

I believe that William Traina and Vito Traina are the same person.... he used William as first name, but in USA many italians changing the first name and sometimes differently from italian first name translation...
so many Vincenzo becoming James... James is Giacomo in italian spell and not Vincenzo(= Vincent)....

abt the son:
William/Billy Traina he was born in 2 Oct 1904
State Where Number was Issued: New York
Death: Feb 1973 Mineola, Nassau, New York, United States of America

abt the italian records, however we cannot be sure that William Trayna was really Vito Traina; it is a my suggestion, and for to be sure, by LDS microfilms of Prizzi you can try abt Vito Traina birth; he must have the same birthdate of William Trayna: 13 Dec 1879

PRIZZI vital records microfilms
Registri dello stato civile di Prizzi (Palermo), 1821-1902 Prizzi (Palermo). Ufficio dello stato civile

William Trayna death:
Trayna William 61 y Sept 27 1940 cert. n° 19366 (1940) Kings birthyear 1878 - 1879

thanks!!!the Gaetana Giordano born in Pignola maybe is no the same married at Vito Traina, because by Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, Civil Registration Records, 1861-1938 (Pignola is in Potenza province) the parents, was Saverio Giordano and Maria Vittoria Tivieri/Tiviersi(?).. so my first ship’s manifest found is no right… it are another Gaetana Giordano born abt in 1888, also emigrated in 1903, coming from Lercara, in travel with Salvatore Giordano and Rosa Muratore
; and Antonietta and Gaetana Giordano and a nephew Gioacchino Romano
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0028
this record seeming more probable…
bye,

Hi :-)

This listing on www.italiangen.org
Birth in NYC for Maria Traino

If this is your Maria, you can request this document from NYC Vital records. It will have names of parents and their birthplace.

Thank you again to you all.

SUANJ: I found Vito Traina and his sisters at Ancestry.com New York Passenger Lists but not at Ellis Island??? According to the manifest they are going to their uncle. At Family Search Records I found Girolamo Traina and Giovanna Randazzo as parents to one Tomassa Traina b. June 26, 1865 in Prizzi. I can not find Vito or his sisters who came to USA with him in 1902. Since you know a lot about italian records, are not all church records to be found at Family Search Records, and where is it possible to find out that our Vito is the right one?

but you ordered the microfilms or you made the search on line here??? http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/ ... search.asp

you must try in the microfilms because they are no transcribed on familysearch.org
abt ellisisland.org, the records are the same of ancestry.com but transcribed differently... so maybe Vito Traina name is mispelled on ellisisland.org
all the best,

The post from Ellis Island is indeed confusing! If you read the image, and goes one image back, it says SS Palatia sailing from Palermo 1902 Arriving Port NY July 14th 1902, so both the ship and the names are very wrong spelled! It is more accurate on Ancestry.

Is it possible to order microfilms and have them mailed to me? But then I need a reader or viewer or whatever to see those films I guess? Would it be possible to have someone look it up?

If your ancestor does prove to be from Prizzi, the LDS church have put all the Baptism, Marriage and Burial records online here... from 1566 to 1911

They are the original church record images, they've done a lot for Provincia di Palermo.

Prizzi, Provincia di Palermo
