Was my great grandmother a royal princess from Italy?

Postby Sheida02 » 28 Sep 2010, 17:00

Hello Friends,
I am trying to trace my family roots back to San Pietro, Guararno, Cosenza, Italy.

My cousin has a birth certificate that states the following information:

MARIA ANTONIA CERASA
Date of birth: 18/10/1869
Place of birth: SAN PIETRO, GUARARNO,COSENZA, ITALY
Father: GIUSEPPE CERASA Mother: RHODA RENDE

Maria Antonia Cerasa is my great grandmother. She married Gabriele PRETE (My great grandfather). They lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. I am trying to trace these people back to Italy. Maria Cerasa used to go by the name of Mary Cherry. I found a 1900 Census that had both my great grandparent's names along with the name Joseph Cherry on it. I have reason to believe that Joseph Cherry was my great grandmother's brother.

My grandmother, my mother, & all of my aunts have all stated & agreed that my great grandmother (Maria Antonia Cerasa) used to tell everyone that she was a princess of royal decent and fled her country to marry a peasant which was my great grandfather (Gabriele Prete). The stories were really wonderful when I was a child. However, I want to find out the truth so my children will have the correct information regarding their family history as opposed to some fairy-tale!

I would greatly appreciate any information that could help my family and I in our search for the truth!

Much Thanks,
Sheila Young

Hi Sheila! Welcome to the forum :-)

Do you know if this is an Italian Birth Record that your cousin has?
It will tell the place of birth of each of the parents as well as the child... that will help you trace back for your GGM's family...

If you want to secure a copy of the record yourself (and additional records such as Maria's father's and mother's birth record, and their marriage record) you can write directly to the Comune of San Pietro in Guarano.

You should write in Italian, and only request one or two records at a time...
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Municipio, 1
87047 San Pietro in Guarano (CS)
ITALY

You should write in Italian... here are links to form letters
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... talrecords
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Don't send any money unless/until you are asked to. These records are usually free.
Send a self-addressed UNSTAMPED envelope with your request...

Another path to go would be to go to your nearest Family History Center run by the LDS...

They have microfilmed Civil registration records (birth, death, marriage, etc.) for San Pietro in Guarano from 1770 - 1910...
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... di++San+++

You willl need to visit the nearest FHC to order/rent the film, and when the film(s) come in, which takes about 3-4 weeks, you will need to view them at the center...

To find the nearest FHC use this link and put in your zip code at the bottom of the page...

Here's something interesting for you to take a look at....

There is an adjacent town to San Pietro in Guarano called RENDE... :-)
Here's a link to its site...
