obtaining/locating my great grandmothers birth certificate

Postby garyf » 29 Sep 2010, 22:47

How would I go about obtaining/locating my great grandmothers birth certificate that was supposedly an orphan/adopted? Her maiden name was Giovanna Vestaglia. She had foster parents, last name Cali, but she's listed as "ignota" on all the documents that ask for her parents' name. We believe she was born in born in Palermo (Casteldaccia), but told everyone that she was too young to remember. I was told she was very "mysterious" and didn't share too much information about her past. My great grandfathers name is Onofrio Russo, and I believe they were married before he came to America in 1921 (he was 29). I have hit a brick wall in my search. If anyone can give me some advise/tips on how to go about tracking down her birth certificate, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hello and welcome to the forum-
There are microfilmed records for the town of Caseldaccia and, if she was born there, her birth record would be in part two of the year you think she might have been born. The record would be totally handwritten with perhaps her name in the margin. Her name would be one which was invented by the town official and probably a surname which no one else in the town would have.

Registri dello stato civile di Casteldaccia (Palermo), 1821-1903

To view the specific microfilm titles available at a local family history center run by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, go to www.familysearch.org

Go to where it says search records and then to library catalog in the drop down box under that. Then do a place search and put in the town name in the top box and Italy in the bottom box. Click on town name on next screen and then on civil registration on the screen after that. Then click on view film notes and you will see what microfilmed records are available for your town.

If you wish to write directly to Casteldaccia for the marriage record of Onofrio and Giovanna... This will give place of birth for bride and groom... you can follow the trail from there...

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Via Veneto, 3
90014 Casteldaccia (PA)
ITALY

Form letters in Italian for your request...

Don't know if you have this later manifest 1932, for Giovanna and children
There are visa and/or passport numbers listed

May provide a lead...
Also lists a sister Olga Vestaglia in Casteldaccia...

I'm using Ancestry.com which is a paid subscription site, but you can usually get a 2 week free trial... :-)

Do you have Census records?

I would definitely pursue the documents from Casteldaccia

The fact that her sister was still living there, and Giovanna remained there with her child when Onofrio traveled to US, is a good indication that they probably married there. If they married in Giovanna's "hometown", there would still be a notation in Onofrio's birthplace, on his birth act, that there was a marriage, and when and where it took place...
Love those Italian records!!! :-)

So does that mean Onofrio Russo, that was 2 at the time, is there son? That might be my grandfather, but his name is Nofrio Russo and was born in 1924 in america, supposedly.

Why not write to the comune at the address above and solve that mystery yourself? :-)

There is usually no charge for the records...

PS - I had the same situation with my grandmother... we all thought she was born in US. Seems she was not too accurate about her birth year...
Come to find out, she was born in Italy and came at the age of 2.
Sound familiar?

Thanks for your help!! That would be really cool if he was actually born in Italy when everyone thought he was born in America.

I would like to get Italian citizenship one day, so if my grandfather was actually born in Italy and became a nationalized citizen BEFORE my mother was born, that would automatically disqualify me, correct? I know I would qualify through my great grandfather, but that is only because I was told my grandfather was born in America.

Oh well, either way its really exciting finding out the history of my family :D

If he thought (or everyone told him) he was born in America, he probably never went through a Naturalization process...

So that would mean he was still an Italian citizen...

Hmmmm.... You should look into it :-)
