finding grandfathers

Postby sanstin » 10 Oct 2010, 09:38

I have records of my grandfather vittorio Pretotto winning a medal in WW1 , cavalerie di vittorio veneto and with this it says his father was Luigi. actually fu Luigi , which i was told means vittorio got the award after his father luigi was (fu) deceased. my question is how do I get records or from where do I get records on the father of luigi since the Veneto was in austrian hands.

question 2. There are many many surnames in the Veneto ending in otto, what does this indicate since I was told my surname Pretotto originally came from the Venetian word for magistrate, Pretor
