Naturalization paperwork from footnote? - Paolo Messina

Postby JPMessina44 » 13 Oct 2010, 20:12

Hello all, I've noticed that another post had somebody look up naturalization documentation on footnote.com, so I was curious if this could be done for me as well. I'd appreciate any help. As usual, thanks so much for everybody's support during this process, means a lot to me!

Paolo Messina (Paul americanized)
Born: Catania, Sicily
DOB 6/11/1888
Death: 12/1954
Married to Madalena Disanto in 1909, Lawrence/ Masschusetts.

According to the 1910 census, he lived in Massachusetts, 1920 in Connecticut, and 1930 in Bronx, NY. In the 1930 census, he was "FA", so he submitted his intent paperwork. Was curious as to see if any information can be pulled up around dates of that occurance and also if he ever finished the process.

I appreciate the support and any help would be greatly appreciated!

oh, forgot to mention, he would have been living in the Bronx, NY during the period where I suspect he submitted his intent paperwork.

http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm

For Bronx county court-declarations-there are three entries

Messina Paolo vol 48 page 262
Messina Paolo declaration # 92803
Messina Paul declaration # 74988

For Bronx county court petitions-only one entry as follows:

Messina Paolo page #307 petition #
92879

I have not done a sound search to see if any other possibilities come up in the search.

Out of Peg's finds, this is the most reasonable possibility however the address is in Southern Manhaqttan, a long way from the Bronx.

I would suggest you go straight to the National Archives and place an order using the information available. It only costs $7.50 for non-certified copies and $22.50 for certified (which you will need for your aplication) and there is no charge if they don't find the correct record. Also, NARA is usually very fast - an answer rarely takes more than a week to ten days.

Did I tell you how to order from NARA yet?

if you could tell me how to order from NARA that would be great. I figure I need to go onto their website, but theres a NYC branch or NARA homepage?

What kind of information will they ask for in order to order the certified copy?

I don't believe the one attached is my ggfather since he was born June 1888, that would have made him 42 yrs old on the May 26th, 1930 date. (there was another Paolo born in 1887 from the Bronx, this one is probably him.)

The other piece is that the 1930 census said FA, i dont know the exact date the census comes out, but i don't know if he can go from FA to Naturalized in the same year?

Thanks.

thanks for sending. my new york branch (which I can get to in 5 minutes) contain the same documents as the online version? If so, wouild it be quicker to get the census (online says 60-90 days) and naturalization certified says 3-10 business days.

If it will only take you 5 minutes to get there...go for it. (the naturalization) :-)

I agree! This would be a huge advantage.

Be sure to take along every shred of information you have on Paolo, thus giving the archivist the best chance of finding the correct record.

Awesome, will do! For me, I take the PATH train 3 stops and I'm right next to the bldg. If this is an advantage, I'll definitely just go in personally.

I'll bring his military WW1 and WW2 cards, the 1910, 1920, 1930 census, his ship manifest and "diploma card" from ellisisland.org, and his marriage certificate from 1909. Hopefully this will be enough to find his records.

I also have his DOB and Date of Death. As well as his address from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York City (Bronx.)

Fingers crossed* I hope that they have his naturalization records, so I don't have to go to the USCIS.
