I'm looking for Italian ancestry

Postby andres.finschi » 30 Oct 2010, 17:11

Hi, my name is Andrés Finschi.
A very good friend of mine from Italy commented to me that my last name must be Italian, and i'm realy interested to know if it's true.
All i know that my great-grandfather, who arrived here in Chile, was called Karl Finschi Wunderli. He came from Safien, Switzerland, but his father could be from Italy.
Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to this forum.

There is an Italian surname Fineschi, so perhaps that was the original spelling and the letter "e" was dropped.

Hello, Andres. Welcome!

The current Italian telephone directory does not have any listings for Finschi, however there are many for Fiaschi.

If you are of Italian descent, it is possible that the spelling of your name has been changed over the years or that the name has died out in Italy.

I have no idea where you would find passenger lists from Italy to Switzerland.

I just found the following though-

Finschi is a swiss romantsch name. It is not Italian.
My great great grandfather was fintschi but he came from flerden and his grand parents came from safien. I believe that Safien carried the name finschi for a very long time.
