Biogio Grassi and Carmella Lopresti

Postby charlotteiverson » 31 Oct 2010, 07:56

Hello all
I am new to this site so I am going to throw out what I have and see if I can move forward.

I am interested in the Grassi and Lopresti family.

Biagio William Grassi
Birth 21 Oct 1879 in Sicilia, Italy( maybe)
Death 29 Jan 1952 in Bellevue Ohio
Acoording to his obituary his fathers names is James Grass and his mother is Angeline Baronia, on the other hand according to his marriage record his father is Vincenzo Grassi and his mother is Angela Biogli/Biagli (sp).

He married Carmella Lopresti
Birth 8 Sep 1883 in near Palermo
Death 18 MAY 1962 in Bellevue, Sandusky,Ohio,USA
According to the marriage record her father is Caloggi Lopresto
and her mother is Maria Ciuppa.

Records indicate that Biagio came to the US either in 1898 or 1900.
Carmella came to the US in 1903. I have searched Ellis Island and have not found any records that match for either of them.

The marriage occurred in Ohio. They have 8 children all born in the US.

Any guidance you may be able to give me would be verry much appreciated.!!!!
Thank you for your time and I hope you have a great day.

do you have the family on the 1910 census?

I see them with Biaggio's name being listed as Biaggio Grasi William

In addition to wife Carmela and two children, there is a sister in law, Josephine Lobiste (this would be Carmela's sister), age 15 (born about 1895). I tried to find (Giuseppa) on a passenger list to see if we could get a town of birth for the Lopresti sisters, but no luck on Ellis Island with them. You may have already tried this.

If you need the 1910 census, someone else will have to upload it to the forum for you.

I can't prove that the following is your ancestor, but this might be a passenger list of interest:

First Name: Biagio
Last Name: Crasci
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Militello
Date of Arrival: Oct 19, 1899
Age at Arrival: 21y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Spartan Prince
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0011

This Biagio's destination was to a cousin with last name Manzo who was living at 120 Still Street in Cleveland.

question for the poster-

do you know if Biagio had any brothers living in the Cleveland area? On passenger lists from Militello Rosmarino (Messina), I have found a Giuseppe, Salvatore, Antonio, and Basilio all from the same town as the Biagio I found and the four of them are brothers. The only one I can't connect to them is Biagio. The surname on the passenger lists varied in spelling-Crasci and Grasci and Craci

On the 1910 census for Cleveland, Cuyahoga County-I see a Charles Lopresto who was a boarder at 1713 Orange Avenue. He was age 41. ED 208, sheet 30 A, line 16. That would account for the fact that Josephine Lopresti was living with her sister and her family at the end of April.

Thank you all for the replies. This is awesome!!!

I do have the 1910 census and all of the information.
I do know that Biagio did have brothers but I do not know what there names are at this point. I am searching.

I have been trying to search for Josephine as well. I also know that Carmella had a sister named Marie/Marie.

I am researching the information that was listed below....but I am still looking.

I am trying to get ahold of the church where they were married to see if they have any information. I know that Carmella had to arrive at the beginning of 1903 or before because Biagio and Carmella were married in 1903 in Ohio.

Once again thank you all for all of your help.

Hi Peg,
I know not... Carmela was born abt in 1882, so the father must be born around 1860... however I cannot confirming that the Giuseppa Lo Presti arrival is abt the Carmela sister, but something matching... ..what is strange, it is that after deep search I cannot find the WWI draft registration card of Biagio... as a well the 1900 census... maybe could be helpful.. Hugs,

I found a 1900 census on the family search beta website for a Calogero Lopresti -also a boarder living Hill Street who was born Nov 1861 with an immigration year of 1899 and a marriage year of 1892. I don't know though if this is Carmela's father. I have no way of telling this.

Hi Peg, maybe the marriage year could be 1882 and not 1892 as he declared... also it is possible that Calogero first name, in USA becoming Charles... it could be interesting to find some death record in Ohio abt the Lopresti/Lopresto... if the parent's names are the same of Carmela parents,
bye,

When I look at Biaggio on the census on Heritage Quest, the part with his name is very blackened, but it looks like he is 23 making him born about 1877. However, the census on the the family search beta site has him born in Dec 8, 1866, and I can see on the census that that is the date given, but the age still looks like 23 to me on the actual census and not 33. So it is possibly him with the name misspelled, or it may not be. I can't really say. This census though does go with the passenger list info I found earlier, as there are the Manzo relatives on it.

There are a few Calogero and Charles Lopresto/Lopresti in the death index for Ohio. I have no way of knowing which is the right one.

Charlie
Don't get too excited yet because we don't know if all of the above info-the passenger lists and the 1900 census records-belong to your family. I did see your Biaggio on the 1910 and 1920 census. so we know those documents are yours. As to the others, we are not sure at this point.

If you are contacting the church, ask if they have the towns in Italy where both Biaggio and Concetta were born. Even if the church does not put that information on a copy of the record you might get from them, that information should still appear in its registers.
