I tried to delete the following because it lists the individual as an African American, which could be incorrect. Definitely sounds like an Italian name to me! It does show the birthplace for both parents though as being Italy.

Possible death record info for Calogero. Of course, the date of birth does not match the date of birth on the census record I found.

There is also death record for a Mary Lopresti, the wife of Calogero Lopresti. The problem is that her father is a Joseph Santora which would mean that Santora and not Ciuppa was her maiden name. I have no way of knowing if her husband, Calogero, is the same person in the death info above. If it is her husband, then the only way that he could be yours is if he was married to a second wife who also had the first name Mary.

I feel so bad but I'm just not getting anywhere and have to give up on this for now. Hopefully Charlie will come across some new family oral history to help determine if anything above connects to the ancestry.

Thanks for trying to help with this.

Cuyahoga County Probate Court Historical Marriage Index

Your Carmela and Biagio come up under the spelling Lopresto and Grasi. There are also many entries under the surname Lopresti, which might give you ideas for the married surnames of Carmela's sisters. There are also a lot of entries under Grassi. Maybe some of the names will mean something to you and give you a lead.

this search is a mystery.... I cannot find the WWI draft registration card abt Biagio... and in the arrivals from 1898 to 1900 I found just a similar name:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Biagio Grossi
Name: Biagio Grossi
Arrival Date: 26 Oct 1900
Birth Year: abt 1877
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Hesperia

I just can't believe how many brick walls we are both hitting. I even checked the WWII draft regsitrations since those started with men born end of April of 1877. I checked on the Biagio Grassia which came up in the search on ancestry, but since I don't have a subscription, I went through the cards on the family search beta site. He was born Feb 5, 1881 in Bronte Italy and his wife's name was Vita. Only thing in common was it was an Ohio card. I also went through all kinds of spellings of the last names by hand and still nothing.

I know that Charlie appreciates us continuing to search, but I am exhausting my non subscription options.

On that passenger list you posted above, that Biagio is listed as married. I know that could be an error, or maybe he was married before in Italy. I just wanted to point that out to Charlie. Also his destination was not to Ohio, not that that means anything at this point, as he could have stayed in NY for a while upon first entering the country before traveling to Ohio.

Thanks again for your help. This one really is a mystery for both of us.

Thank you Suanj

According to 1920 census Biagios name is also spelled Grossi and came to America in 1900. So that one might be it. the only difference is that is states that he is 21 not 23......

thank you so much for all of your time and I hope you have a great day!!!!

I tried searching with the di in front of the surname, but not many hits come up and none come up with the first name Biagio or any variation in spelling of that first name.

I really am at a total loss on this. The surname has to be badly misspelled on a passenger list. That's why I gave you those variations I found earlier. One thing I didn't try though is using the first name as a last name in a passenger list search. I have found census records that way, so why not passenger lists??? I'll give that a try but then I am quitting for the evening.

sorry, but even though you get hits that way, I don't see anything that works.

Have a good evening and don't give up. Just when you don't expect new info to come your way, it will. It may just not happen overnight.

Thank you to all that tried to help me uncover my mystery.
I am still searching and will not give up....maybe just a little break to clear my head. I will work on another section of my family.

Once again I really appreciate all the time and effort that everyone has given to my search.

I hope everyone sleeps well and has a great day tomorrow!!!

maestra36 wrote:I can't prove that the following is your ancestor, but this might be a passenger list of interest:

First Name: Biagio
Last Name: Crasci
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Militello
Date of Arrival: Oct 19, 1899
Age at Arrival: 21y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Spartan Prince
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0011

This Biagio's destination was to a cousin with last name Manzo who was living at 120 Still Street in Cleveland.
Peg, maybe this your finding could be right...
because another Crasi, coming from Militello, also emigrated in USA ( Cleveland OH) in 1901; well in same travel
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0009
it was a Rosario Sidoti; now, Sidoti surname is also the maiden name of a daughter in law of Biagio( wife of the son : Charles)
so maybe your finding could be correct... and the Biagio surname in USA becoming Grassi..
your finding is the only very probable... also in Militello Val di Catania town exist the surname Barone( Biagio mother: Baronia... that could be Barone)
