Postby drcjangello » 11 Nov 2010, 04:45

have traced a Giuseppe Angello to my family... His Father was Gaetano Angello DOB abt 1825, Canicatti, Sicily, Italy married to Carmela Raguso DOB abt 1824....

Gaetano's father was Diego Angello DOB abt 1795 and he was married to Mariantonia Accardo DOB abt 1795... Any help to ancestors tied to Diego would be great ... thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum-

The info which Michael31 provided you above will only help you if you are looking for other descendants of the people you named. From what I understand, you are looking for their ancestry. There are microfilmed records available from the town. The state civil records on film are from 1821 to 1910. The earliest marriage and death records will give you people born sometime in the 1700s. Also since you have estimated birth years of 1824 and 1825, you might find these ancestors birth records on microfilm. For the town, there are also census records which go from 1593 to 1816. I won't kid you though. Those films will be very difficult to go through and read. But they do exist. The other thing is that, since the state records did not start in that town (and throughout Sicily) before the early 1820s, church records will give you earlier information about your ancestry.

I see that the mother church was the Chiesa Madre di San Pancrazio, but no address comes up for it in the current Italian yellow pages. I was originally going to suggest that you write to that church to see if the parish had early records for your ancestors.

Here is a link for the current Italian yellow pages:

http://www.paginegialle.it/

You can type in chiese cattoliche where it says cosa and canicatti where it says dove. You then get a list of churches and addresses in the town. I don't know which one might house records for your ancestry. Record copies were not usually kept at the diocese level until 1917. Before that date, it was optional.

This website has photos of the chiesa madre and of the other churches in the town.

http://www.solfano.it/chiesamadre/chiesamadre.html

If you click on the option at left which says Chiese di Canicatti, you can see photos of the various churches there.

If you decide to write to particular parish, you can refer to the following website to help you compose a letter in Italian. It is customary to make a donation to a parish, but if just inquiring if your ancestor's records are in a particular parish, do not send any money. If you receive an answer that the records are there, then send a donation.

Should you choose to rent microfilm for the town, you must go to a local family center run by the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Anyone can use their libraries. They are staffed by volunteers, so the hours vary depending on the center.

Chiesa Madre
Via Duomo,
92024 Canicattì (AG)

I just found the above address for the mother church in the town.

It comes up on google maps, but is not listed in the current phonebook.
