Foundling

Postby SugnuSicilianu » 05 Jan 2011, 23:17

I am researching foundlings. I have found that some towns kept records on foundlings, the wetnurses they were consigned to, and the stipend the nurses were paid. Some such data exists in the LDS microfilmed records, but only in limited form. Were foundling records kept by churches, hospitals, convents, etc.? Are they in existence, and how can they be accessed? I'm talking about the same perod for which LDS' civil records are available, roughly 1809 through 1910, depending on the region of Italy.

I am also aware of a convention in some towns of "loaning" foundlings to persons or families as farm workers, miners, servants or worse. Were the "caretakers" of foundlimgs recorded in any way?

Many foundlings' birth records include detailed descriptions of clothing worn by babies left in "the wheel". Some stories tell of mothers who left their children in the wheel with a token or identifiable clothing, then returned and took their own child, to nurse, for a stipend.

Sora has some great Foundling records that list who the child was fostered to and how much they were paid. The later ones even have photos of the wet nurse and the reason she is providing this service. In the Archivio comunale di Sora.
