Looking for info on husband's grandfather from Colobrar

Postby kfalabel » 07 Jan 2011, 00:40

My husband is trying to find information regarding his grandfather Biagio Falabella and his brothers. Think he came from Calabria region, possibly Colorbraro. He arrived in US in 1901 and was 21 years old at the time.

I found the manifest you are on about. He was going to Philidelphia to see his cousin Antonio Falabella.
His birth was in Colorbraro, 29th or 31st July, 1880.
He was a Barber, married to a Catarina and lived at 1412 Dickenson St and 1439 Federal St. Philidelphia.
He stayed in Naples before coming over to US.

Catarina was born just north of Colobraro Matera, Basilicata, Italy. A place called Sant'Arcangelo Potenza, Italy.

Is this you family?

Yes, this is my husband's grandfather. How would I find out about Biagio's family. Also, Catarina maiden name?

I would say go to family search libraries, but it doesnt show births around 1880.
I can tell you Catarina shows her name as Mary (maria) in the 1930 census?

Thank you for your reply. When you say to go family search libraries are you referring to the Geneology Library in Salt Lake or is there a webiste that I can go to that does not charge for use?

Where did you find the information on Catarina?

Thank you.

The information that jamiecapaldi provided above can be found on Biagio's Petition for Naturalization...
Filed in 1914
Catarina's place of birth (Sant' Arcangelo, Italy) is listed.

Thank you.

Still looking for Caterina. There is a Frank Domine who appears on the 1920 census. Wondering who that is since it shows Catherine Folabello and Frank Domine as same age (26). Will exhaust all possibilities here before I write to Italy.

Thanks again, your help has been invaluable.

Thanks again for your help.

Found Caterina's birth record (Atti di Nascita)...

Bottom right of image
Record #48

Translation:

Year 1892, 26 Februrary at 2:20 PM at the Town Hall.
Before me, the mayor Scardacione (sp?), appeared Donatandrea Dammiani, 28, coffeemaker, to declare that at 11:10 PM on the 23rd of the current month, at the house on Salito Marrini, no number, to Maria Marabelli, his wife, housewife, living with him, was born a child of female sex, who was presented to me and was given the name Maria Caterina.
Witnesses to this act were Raffaele Rossi, 43, landowner; and Nicola DiGiusa, 51, farm laborer.
The father (Donatandrea) was the only one to sign with the mayor because the others were illiterate.

Interesting that the original spelling of the name has 2 m's...
