Next steps for finding ggf parents names

Postby jantonelli81 » 07 Jan 2011, 03:07

I have searched 1920 census , ship manifests, WWI draft card and just received his social security card, and still no luck. Non of them list his parents names, any other relative (other than children) or a more specific name for his place of origin.

This is what I know:

Name: Donato Antonelli (also went by the name Dan)
DOB: December 22, 1888 Itlay
DOD: 1977, Rhode Island
1920 Cencus, Rhode Island: lists 1912 as his Date of Arrival
Wife: Giovannina De Fusco (may also go by first name Jennie and Last name Difruscio)
Her immigration year as listed in cencus also 1912.
WWI Draft Card: S. Ambrogio listed as place or origin

Conflicting info: 1906 ship manifest listing Donato Antonelli arriving in NYC , with a ticket purchased to Providence. (the port I was told he arrived in by family).

I was told that he met and married his wife "Jennie" in Rhode Island, but she was also born in Italy about (1891). I can not find any records on her either.

I would love to find these documents their marriage cert., my GGM arrival, birth cert., obit. Any source that will let me confirm my GGF place of birth, and to learn about my great grandparents' parents names.

Maybe other records could be helpful for your research, for example this is the 1915 census for Rhode Island state for Donato:

The family was:

Antonaly Dan, head, born in IT, age 27, PA (filled the first papers for the naturalization process)
Antonaly Jennie, wife, age 27, born in IT
Antonaly Frank, son 3 moths old, born in U.S.
Antonaly Marion, age 1 born in U.S.
Antonaly John, brother, age 20, born in Italy

They were living in Burrilville, same as 1920 census and WW! draft card for Donato...

image, from Familysearch.org:

Considering that you found him in the 1910 census and he was single, and considering that in this 1915 census his daughter Marion was 1 year old we can establish that he married Jennie between 1910 and 1913/1914..

I found the site of the Cemetery of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano but unfortunately it seems that neither one Antonelli's is buried there :?

Has it been decided for certain which Sant'Ambrogio Donato came from?

There are at least three to choose from:

Comune di Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, Provincia di Torino, Regione di Piemonte, Northwestern Italy

Comune di Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, Provincia di Verona, Regione di Veneto, Northeastern Italy

Comune di Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, Provincia di Frosinone, Regione di Lazio, Central Italy

The Family History Library has microfilms for Sant'Ambrogio di Torino which cover the necessary years (1866-1929) - See http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... ant%27Am++

My hobby is finding things. Having found most of my own, I am happy to help others find theirs. PM me! :)

If it helps, Antonelli and Fusco are names very much associated with the area around Casalattico, Frosinone, so if I was making an educated guess, I'd go with Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, particulalry if the port of departure for the States was Naples.

On another thread by this poster, I suggested the town of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, as I believe it is the correct town. There was a change in the boundary in 1926, as far as I know, and I believe this town used to be considered part of Caserta but is now in the Province of Frosinone.

There is an email address for the town on this website. Since you have the date of birth of your ancestor, you should send an email (in Italian) to the email address on this website. Give the name of your ancestor and the date of birth you have and ask for the name of his parents. If there is no record of him in this town, they will tell you. It would be a way of verifying that this is the correct town.

I also saw his WWII draft registration card on the family search beta site. On that card, he simply gives his town of birth as Santo Ambrogio(a).

Thank you Peg, I'm sure it's the correct town....
This could be another confirmation...
There is no doubt that on the 1915 census Donato was living with his brother John Antonelli... this is the WW1 draft Card for John Antonelli:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Giovanne Antonelli
Name: Giovanne Antonelli
City: Providence
County: Providence
State: Rhode Island
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 24 Jun 1894
Race: White
FHL Roll Number: 1852408
DraftBoard: 9

Plae of birth: Sant'Ambrosio sul Gagliano (for sure a mispelling of Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano)

image:
http://postimage.org/image/2aejz10qs/

I'm sure that the poster can confirm or not that Donato had a brother in RI..

Ufficio Anagrafe
Comune di Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano
V. Roma, 38
Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano (FR)

Laura
That would be great if Jenn can confirm that Giovanni was her ancestor's brother.

I'm also pretty sure that somewhere on the Archivio di Caserta website, they list towns that used to be in "Terra di Lavoro" and that this town was listed there as well.

The town of Sant' Ambrogio sul Gariglano is listed under the Archivio di Stato di Caserta on page 19 of a 22 page pdf file. I don't see a way of linking that here.

Caserta, as a province, was not established until 1945.
