Surnames shortened by the US.

Post by onyxshadow13 »

I have completed five years of research now, and I still need help. My family name was shortened when my great grandmother and great grandfather came over in the early 20th century. The name is now FRAIL, but the original name was much longer. I have looked through a number of films and there are a few names that can work. Does anyone else have this issue, or does anyone have suggestions?

Hey Rocky!
Have you located their ship manifest or naturalization papers?
Thank you, Valarie

I have nothing yet. It's like I'm just starting. No one is alive to tell me what the name was. I need a lot of help. I met my great grandmother once and she spoke no English.

Rocky, if your ancestor lived in West Virginia, most probably the surname was Ferella..
I found a:
Name: Joe Frail
Spouse: Sarah Frail
Birth: abt 1877 - Italy
Residence: 1930 - Grant, Monongalia, West Virginia
and I believe that in italian spell the surname was Ferella; also I found some other italian similar surname in West Virginia ....
if you can say us the name of your italian ancestor we can help....
all the best,
suanj

Her name was Elizabeth Frail. Sara may have been her sister. She had 5 sisters from what I understand. But that's awesome. Thank you so much. I will look into it.

I don't have the census but I have the info from the 1930 census with the frail name. She and her sisters all are listed on it. My grandmother and one living great uncle is listed however he had a stroke and can't speak.

That is her. She married Trace Donation after my test grandfather came up missing. Josephine is my grandmother. Wow. Thank you. But how do I find the original name because the italian records that I have looked at do not incude the name 'frail'

I don't understand how you all found that info so quickly. I'm very happy for it. I just looked and can't locate the 1910 census.
