The Donia Family of Messina, Sicilia, Italy

Postby ChelsBU07 » 31 Jan 2011, 03:42

I am looking for any information regarding the Donia family of Messina, Italy. My great-great grandfather was Frank Donia (born November 30, 1869 in Messina). His parents were Joseph and Francis. He married Angela Killea (or Gilea), also of Messina. Frank supposedly immigrated to the US in 1903 and Angela in 1906 but I cannot find any immigration papers. If anyone can give me more information about this family, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I did see that one on the Ellis Island website. It seems like it could be right except when I review census information from Pennsylvania where he lived, he says he immigrated in 1903.

Sometimes what they declare on census could be wrong after so many years, ciao Riccardo

Possible last name in Sicily. Gilia or Gilio

Riccardo is absolutely right that census info is notoriously inaccurate. People forget dates and spellings are often wrong.

The only thing I've found is an obituary for Frank Donia from 1956 where it refers to his wife as Angela Gilea. The local newspaper is notorious for spelling errors. So Gilia could be correct. That's a definite possibility that the census is off.

As starter (original Donia Italia file is about 700 pages) look for link.

http://www.vanbritsom.com/nameenglish.html

Going very quickly through history: Donia's were very strong political powers players in Friesland (Frisia) around the year 1400. Have more or less strong evidence that Matteo Donia,
the philosophe, writer, pathelog, poet, medicus working with Ingrassia +/- 1400 Sicillie, is stemming from them.

father of 13 children i.e. franscico (engraver mapmaker) see Fabretti, 'de aquis et aquvaeductibus ueteris romae'1653; others, gold and silversmiths; google also map of Messina by an other Donia. What ever, frisian file about 1.200 pages .
