Searching for Pietro Tangredi

Postby rockywizdom » 11 Feb 2011, 07:42

Hello all,
I am new here and hoping I can get some help finding information for my ggrandfather PIETRO TANGREDI. I have his death as Oct 15, 1911 in NYC. He is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery (Queens) and was married to Carolina.
There is an issue with the last name as it was changed over time to TANCREDI. I would like to find a death notice for him but since he lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan I have been unable to find any obituary. Is there an Italian language newspaper that anyone might know of for this time period? He was so young when he died I am curious about the events surrounding his death (4/10/1876 - 11/15/1911). Thank you for your help.

Possible manifest for Carolina Cavezzo in August 1897 (same date as census)

Arriving NY with sons Luigi, age 2 and Antonio, age 6 months.
Also traveling with them is Marianna Tangredi (possibly Pietro's mother)
They are going to Pietro Tangredi in NY.
Their last place of residence is Cicciano (Naples Province, Campania Region)

Thank you so much for your fast response! I do have the 1900 US Census just not posted. The 1910 looks "iffy" to me and I will certainly research it further. You did however provide me with a key re: Anielllo Tancredi linking to the 1905 New York Census where I found him living on the same street (James). This information of course gives a new direction to search! I have been looking for years.
I am still looking for death notices. Apparently the established papers of the time did not include immigrant obituaries. Did anyone keep these records? This is my dead end.

Thank you soooo much for all your help Tessa!!

Glad to have helped... :-D

As for the 1910 Census... give it a good look, the names are misspelled, but they seem to agree with the names and ages of the children in the 1900 and 1920 Censuses.

I'll keep looking for the obit, but have been unsuccessful with the resources I use :-(

Thanks you. Yes, I have come to realize the spellings on the names can vary quite a bit. I understand gathering the information at the time was quite an interesting venture. I am currently comparing the information I have. I wish I could get an obituary for any of these people. They are proving to be difficult to find online. I may have to trek to the NY Public Library. I am actually closer to Albany but I am not sure if they would have these records. I will make some phone calls. Thanks again for helping me chase my family down.
