Stuck on Family Tree (NICOLICCHIA/RAIA)

Postby k8egrrl20 » 12 Feb 2011, 01:38

I have a problem and hope that someone can help me.

I have made it my project this year to go as far back in my genealogy as I can on both my mother's and my father's sides. I haven't had any problems with my mother's side, however I have gotten stuck on my father's side. I have been able to find some records, but have gotten stuck when I get to searching for my great-great grandfather and grandmother. Here is what I have found so far:

Great-great grandfather: Vittorio Nicolicchia (b. 1866? - d. ?) from Sicily
Great-great grandmother: Vincenza Raia (b. 1871? - d. ?) from Italy
Arrived in New York City, New York on 16 Feb 1928 from Palermo

That is all I have. If there is ANYONE out there who can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

What are the names of the towns in Sicily / Italy that these families came from? Where did they settle when after entering the USA?

There are still Nicolicchia's in Palermo may be try to contact them with a letter
heres the website
http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... dv=palermo
Heres a letter to send to potiental family
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... #relatives
Ancestry only has a short index of records from Palermo 1876-1885 so you might be best to write for records to Italy.
Have you checked Family History Library?

Palermo is both a region and a town within Sicily....

assuming he was from the actual town and not just the region, a member here at IG has transcribed some of the births, marriages and deaths from Palermo, if not now maybe this will come in handy for future research:

scroll down to the bottom of the page for other records...

Thank you so much for all of that information!

To be able to see when they were married, as well and his parents' names, is just amazing. You have helped me in a very big way.

Thank you! :D
