Great-great grandmother

Postby jeanneicolari » 15 Feb 2011, 16:47

Hi -

Recently found on a ship manifest:
SS Neckar August 8, 1907 from Naples to NY

My great grandmother Lucia Cesare who was a passenger along with my
grandmother Giovanna. As I read across it appeared that she was
living with her mother in S. Agato di Goti but the name is hard to read. It appears to say: Mot (mother?) Maura Alissandra (?). If I could figure out this name, I believe I would finally have a name for my great great grandmother!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The mother Alessandra's last name is Mauro, a surname currently in S. Agata di Goti.

Sant'Agata De' Goti is the correct spelling of the town name

Thank you so much for that quick response! Were you able to view this manifest? Would I be correct in assuming that that is the name of my great grandmother?

I am planning on making a trip to a Family Research Center to get the microfilm for Italy in that time period. Hopefully I can find out more!

Thanks again,
Jeanne

Yes, I did view the manifest and that does appear to be the name of Lucia's mother. The microfilmed records, for the town, however, only go to 1860, so that could be too early to locate her parents' marriage record which would give your their parents' names as well.

Registri dello stato civile di Sant'Agata de' Goti (Benevento), 1809-1860

Thank you so much for your reply. How would I go about getting information before 1860?

First you should try to get Lucia's birth record from the town. I think her estimated year of birth is 1873.

Hi Jeanne,

I am researching the Cesare family in Sant'Agata de' Goti and saw your note

I have Antonio Cesare born 20 Feb 1893 son of Antonio Cesare

He married on 29 May 1919 in Sant'AGata de' Goti

Marianna Manera born 3 Jul 1897 dau of Pasquale Manera

They emigrated from Naples on 13 May 1921 arriving in NYC on 26 May 1921
and lived in Brooklyn

I would be interested in your experiences in obtaining civil or church records
from Sant'Agata de'Goti

Good morning,

A few years ago I did write to them and I received an immediate reply along with a copied document which I believe was a birth certificate. I have tried several times since then with no response :(
This sounds like it could have been a brother although I didn't know about this person. I will have to look into this on a manifest or census and see what the relation was.

Thanks!
