Looking for Angelo Lombardo

Postby LeandraCat » 15 Feb 2011, 16:01

Hello everyone,

I am putting together my husband's family tree and have hit a brick wall.
My husband's grandfather's real father was Angelo Lombardo, son of Salvatore Lombardo & Giuseppa Pavone, brother of Michele (b: 1877).
The family lived in San Giovanni Gemini, but Michele and Angelo was born in Valguarnera, sicily.

Michele came to America in 1906-1907 and his wife with kids in 1908.
They lived in Jersey City, NJ
Giuseppa Pavone came alone in 1926 as a Widow.

Angelo married Antonina(Anna) Schiro after her husband Domenico Badami passed away.
Angelo and Anna had two sons: Salvatore (B:1917) and Angelo (B:1919). Sometime between 1919 and 1920, Angelo Lombardo passed away.

No one can tell me why Angelo died or even where he is buried.

I don't know when Angelo came to the US and with whom. I cannot find him in any of the Census records. In 1920 Census, his wife Anna and two children lived with Anna's sister Rose Sacco (also a Widow).

Any help you can offer is really appreciated!

Thank you!
Julia

Julia,
Welcome to the forum!
Just for reference,
Is this the correct 1920 census?

Was Angelo's wife Anna Schiro born in New York?
Thank you, Valarie

Another clue?
brother Michele's wife and children in 1907?
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0028
joining Michele Lombardo in Jersey City

Do you have Michele's manifest?
It may help to know who he was joining

Thank you, Valarie

Yes, I found Michele's wife and kids, but not Michele! I found one Michele, arriving in 1906, but if he had a son in 1908, it's not possible that he left italy in 1906. I actually have Michele's passport!!! Of course it's in italian, so I have no clue what it says, except that it's a passport for travel to new york and Michele's birth date and parents' names....

If this is Michele's census, he had 6 children, 2 living in 1910?
The birth dates on the census may be incorrect.
His son Angelo on the 1907 manifest was 8 mos old, born in 1906

possible 1910 census for Michele Lombardo and family
similar street name to 1907 manifest for wife and sons

If you can upload the passport to imageshack.us (or another image hosting service) you should be able to get help reading it on the 'Italian language, handwriting , script & translations' portion of the Forum

Michele only had 3 children, actually. I have his naturalization paper. Angelo is really Louis and there was Salvatore(Charles) and Josie(Josephine)

I will have to upload the passport to get an idea of what it says

Oh and if his son Angelo was born in 1906, then the manifest I found for Michele could be right. It says he was going to a brother_in_law I think, but I cannot read the name. I will upload it in a bit...

An interesting manifest for an Angela(o) Lombardo from 22 Jul 1907
(lined-off, did not sail = there should be another manifest)

- born abt 1875 in Valguarnera, 2 yrs older than Michele
- already married to a Maria Calabrese
- joining a brother Filippo in Brooklyn

Depending upon when his son Angelo was born in 1919
Angelo Lombardo may have a WWI Draft Registration Card from 12 Sep 1918...

Yup! I have seen this manifest and the WWI draft card! I wish someone could confirm where they lived in jersey city for the draft card to be right...also the birthplace on the card is not what I thought it should be...

Here is what I think is Michele Lombardo's manifest:

Although last Residence should be San Giovanni Gemini...I kind of think this is him anyway...what do you think?

It looks like the correct manifest for Michele
It appears that he is joining a bother-in-law, Paolo Lo Presti/o
This may be Paolo's manifest from 1904

Do you know Michele & Angelo's sister's name?
It may help to find her on a census in Jersey City

edit: added another link to Michele's 1906 manifest'

That's RIGHT!!! There was a Paul Lo Presto at my husband's grandmother's Wedding!!!!!
Unfortunately, I have no idea what the sister's name was :( I didn't even know they HAD a sister!

Do you think it's possible that Angelo and Michele's father Salvatore came to America without his wife and then his wife didn't come here until after Salvatore was already dead? Angelo and Michele's mother Giuseppa Pavone didn't come to join her son Michele until 1926 or 1927....the manifest said she was a Widow.
I cannot for the life of me find a 1930 Census for Michele Lombardo OR Giuseppa Pavone!

It's possible that their father Salvatore made trip(s) to the US
It was common for folks to travel back and forth to the US to earn $
