Searching for 2nd great grandfathers heritage - Traverca

Postby sandiMB » 16 Feb 2011, 23:31

His name on US records is Mariano Travirca. I believe it may have been Traversa. He came to the US somewhere between 1855 and 1868. He married in the U.S. when he was 29. U.S. census records state that his mother and father were from Italy and that he spoke Italian. I can't find any ship records with his name on it. I'm not sure where to go from here so any help would be great. Grazie!

Is is possible that the first son Simon was not Mariano's son?

Dianna Branfield 23

they were living nex door to Favre John (and his child Simon, Tessie, Armstrong... William married with Mary etc...)

Laura

I believe that Mariano's place of origin may have been a north region of Italy (for example the Trentino Alto Adige region who was under the Austro Hungarian Empire until 1919... this may be the reason Mariano stated he was born in Austria in the 1900 census..) this is just my thought...

Thank you so much for this information. I had the 1900 census and that's where I was confused on the Austria info. I will certainly follow that lead. I was really surprised at the 1880 census and the spelling Savaker, but that definitely is the family. I don't know why his wife wasn't there as her youngest son was barely a year old. She is in the 1920 census. Do you know if any of these spellings of the surname are names found in this region? Grazie!

Prego Sandi!

I don't know which was the correct italian lastname, I can only suppose it was possibly Traversa/Traverso (not many of them in the Trentino Alto Adige region though)...
You can use this helpful site to find the actual spread of the lastnames in Italy:

http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

There are Traversa in the Lombardy region, at the boarder with Switzerland...

You can use this site too to find in which towns a lastname is present:

I researched Hungarian surnames and came up with several that are very close, especially Travicza. When he left Italy, what would have been the most common seaport to leave from?

I'm back to researching Mariano Travirca and came across a passenger list in 1845. A Mariano Travaco was 5 years old traveling with a Jose Honorats G. Du Camara? who is a native of St. Michaels (don't know if this is England or Barbados). I noticed there is a region in Italy Travaco Siccomario. Could he have been an orphan and DuCamara? took him as a servant? Is there any records of orphans in this region?
