Forlenza, Lenza, and D'Elia in Contursi, Salerno, Campa

Postby marknkari09 » 18 Feb 2011, 19:12

Hello all,
First time user here and hope someone can offer some insight. I've just started researching Italian records so I'm not savvy yet. I'm searching for:

Felice and Teresa D'Elia b. 1847 & 1854 respectively. He immigrated to Pittston, PA in 1887, she did the same (with children Fiortina/Fioretta/Flora, Antonio, & Giovanni) in 1891.

Flora married Louis (Luigi) Forlenza in 1895 and had 6 children all born in PA:
Frank (Francesco) 1898
Joseph (Giuseppe) 1901
Clara 1906
Rose/Rosa/Rosy 1908
Dominick 1910
John 1913

I can't find anyone in 1930 Census at all. They may have returned to Italy but I'm not sure. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Yes, Beatrice is Louis' 2nd wife so I believe Flora must have died between 1913 (john's birth) and 1916 (beatrice came over. passenger list shows she is going to visit louis).

I have 1900-1920 censuses, 1891 passenger record where Teresa and Flora came over, 1893 passenger list of Louis, and 1904 passenger list where Louis, Flora, Frank, and Joseph came back from a prolonged visit to Contursi. I can't find anything beyond those. No death, birth, marriages, cemeteries, etc.

Hi,

There are a few posting here on the Forlenza family of Contursi. The name is common in Contursi. Just so you see what has already been researched I am posting the links.

My ggrandparents were from Contursi. My ggrandmother was Rosaria D'Elia, but that is also a common name in Contursi. However they went back and forth a few times as well. Because of the thermal baths, Contursi had a more thriving economy than many other little towns in the area. My ggrandfather took the family back to Italy because of the difficulty of finding employment. He ran a business in Contursi and the only job he could find in the US was sweeping streets. The family returned to the US a few years later.

Your family could have done the same thing.

I know you didn't find anyone in the 1930 census, but can I assume that the children did remain in America? Do you know any of the married names of the daughters?

Contursi records only go back to 1869, but if the family returned there for good, there would be marriage and death records.
