What to do when do not get a reply from Ufficio Civile?

Postby tomassid » 22 Mar 2011, 23:07

I have written several letters to various comune's requesting birth, marriage, etc records and 60% of the time, I get no reply. I even wrote to the mayor in Orune, Nuoro and still no response. Any suggestions? I appreciate any advice.

Hello and welcome. Are you writing to the comune in Italian? I only ask because some times if they can not read the english, I have been told that they will either put the request to the bottom of the pile or just outright ignor the request. Also, as I have been told by some very admirable people here on IG that this , we have to remember is not thier firt priority. I know that this can be very fustrating as I am doing the same thing right now. I have gotten response back to my home within ten days of sending the request, andsome have taken months.

If you have not written the request in Italian, here is a link that will help you compose, sentence by sentence a request that you can send over.

Here is a "sub link" to the one I just sent. It brings you to the exact page you will need.

Thank you so much for your response. Yes, I have written them all in Italian. One took a year and I had asked for various records, then one day I got the envelope with all of the birth and wedding records certified, I was shocked but happy. I found the marriage record of my ggrandparents in Castelpetroso on the FHC microfilm. Wrote to ask for the marriage publication because I was looking for the birth town of my ggrandmother, and they answered me saying no record. Are there duplicate records anywhere else in Italy? Like the Stato Civile? I am desperately trying to find her comune.

Could they have possibly been married in another comune?

I have their marriage record from Castelpetroso that I downloaded from FHC microfilm. It is all hand written and difficult to read, but from what I have transcribed, the very first line says in the year of 1883 on Oct 21 in Castelpetroso, comune of Molise. Would they have that record if they were married elsewhere?

If you can clearly make out the words seperatley, there are many free translation sites to go on:
http://translate.reference.com/

Type the words in and hit translate. Also within the Angelfire link i sent over to you, there are handwriting samples that you can resource. It is a long process to identify the ltters. Look if you come accross letters you can not identify, look for words with the same letters that do look familiar. These will help you put together the words.

here is a link for handwriting books for genealogy:

But do you think this record would be in Castelpetroso if they married elsewhere?

No, my mistake the marriage record would show where they were married you are correct, but this may not be where he was born.

My main goal of locating the marriage record was of course find their parents names, but to see where my gggrandmother was born, I found my gggrandfather's birth in Castelpetroso, but there are no other's in the comune with her last name and no birth record on the film for her year of birth. I wrote to Castelpetroso to get the Marriage publication hoping it would be clearer since they are usuallly forms filled in. But the comune answered me saying no record. I'm stuck until I can find her comune.

Did you receive a photocopy of the original from the town or a typed certificate?
The certificate would not tell the town of birth but the original probably does. You need to ask for ' copia integrale (fotocopia) dell'originale' and include some photo ID.

Tessa, I followed your instructions above and copied to clipboard Forum 1. Hopefully you can open it, you will see X out the other marriages on the page. The names are Vincenzo Orfano and Rachele DiPasquale, the record begins toward the bottom on the left side and continues onto the right. I think I figured out it says Macchio di Molise as the other comune. I also cannot read her parents names, look likes Saverio and Roberta Ciccarelli. Thank you for help.
