Italian military records

Postby roobyred » 23 Mar 2011, 20:06

I'd like to find my grandfathers Italian military records from WWI. Does anyone have any ideas/links to sites that may be helpful? Thanks.

I sent for my grandfather's record and received them in about 3 weeks. I knew the comune where he was born and then posted it on this site. I was given the address of where to send for the records by one of the members. I used a template to draft the letter to the comune which I obtained on line. Good luck.

rooby,

There is helpful info in this thread http://italiangenealogy.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15162/

However, as already noted, you will need to know where your grandfather was born and, with that info, you /we can determine which of the many state archives you need to contact.

Hey I'm really psyched by your posts. He was also taken POW by the Germans. My grandfather was born in Casacalenda, Molise, Italy. What's next? :D

Casacalenda is located in the province of Campobasso. The address for the state archives of Campobasso is:

Archivio di Stato di Campobasso
Via Orefici n. 43
86100 Campobasso
ITALY

Tel: 0874 90349
Fax: 0874 411525

No response from Casacalenda
I emailed. Sent a followup snail mail.
Sent a letter asking if they received either of the above and no response.
Now what?
Can anyone help?
Thanks, Roberta

Did you contact Comune di Casacalenda or Archivio di Stato di Campobasso?

I am not familiar with Archivio di Stato di Campobasso's typical response time; did you write in Italian?

Yes I did with help from someone for the translation. I'm so disappointed. Do you think they are still working on the request?

I am still a little confused; as mentioned earlier, military records come from the state archives (Archivio di Stato di Campobasso), not from the comuni.

Assuming you wrote to Archivio di Stato di Campobasso, then I would say that yes, they are still working on it. Italy's laws require that all requests be answered and though comuni are not always very responsive, you can expect better from the state archives.

The address I used was:
Archivio di Stato Campobasso
Via Orefici n.43
86100 Campobasso Italy
Is this correct?
Thanks, Roberta
