Teresa Garguilo

Postby JoeC » 31 Mar 2011, 11:52

Hi -

I'm having some difficulty making out some text on an Ellis Island ship manifest and hoping that someone here can help. The passenger is my great grandmother, Teresa Garguilo. She immigrated on May 30, 1907 from Sorrento at the age of 20, and is shown on line #10 of the manifest. In column 16, it lists the name and address of who she was going to join. It appears to be "Aunt ? Cafiero" with an address of "352 Pleasant Ave". Can anyone help me with her aunt's first name?

Thanks -
Joe

Livio -

Thank you for helping me understand the name.

I am also trying to find out information about my great-grandmother's siblings and parents. Teresa was born in Sorrento on April 8, 1885, and died in Hoboken, NJ, USA on April 7, 1960. She married Carmine Minetti on March 7, in New York City. As far as I know, she had two brothers, Theodore Gargiulo and Salvatore Gargiulo. I am not sure, but I believe they were older than Teresa. Both immigrated to the United States, though I am not sure when.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Joe

Hi Joe :-)

Found this US Passport application that COULD be Teresa's brother Salvatore...
Only a possibility...

Born in 1880 (so older that Teresa)
From Anacapri (close to Sorrento)
Living in New Haven Conn.
Father's name is Gaetano (deceased at time of application)
Arrival in US about September 1902

Second page has a photo of Salvatore, wife Adelina, and son Gaetano

Hi Tessa -

Thanks for the information, but I don't think it's the Salvatore that I am looking for. I was just reviewing some of the information I had gotten from my grandmother about the Gargiulo part of our family. My grandmother recently passed away, and had alzheimers for quite a while, so at this time, I am not sure about the validity of the information she provided. But, from what she said:

Teresa had two brothers, Salvatore and Theodore. My grandmother also told me that Teresa, Salvatore and Theodore's mother's name was Catherine, but she did not know their father's name.

I have no information from my grandmother of Theodore getting married, but she told me that Salvatore did marry, and had three children, two girls and one boy. One of the girls was named Catherine, and the boy was Theodore. My grandmother did not know the other girls name. Supposedly Catherine married someone who's first name was Vincent, and they had five children, all boys.

Thanks for your help.

Joe

abt Theodore:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_L._Gargiulo
" Theodore Luigi Gargiulo (December 19, 1915 - December 11, 2006) was an American conductor, composer, and musicologist.

Born in New York City, Taddeo Gargiulo was the son of immigrant parents Salvatore Gargiulo, a baker from Sorrento, and Erminia Mascia from Castellamare di Stabia, Italy. During the Great Depression, Theodore discovered his passion for the piano and found a way to begin his studies. His talent and pursuit led to a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. As he studied music theory and harmony, he was asked to join the National Youth Administration Symphony under the direction of Leopold Stokowski, where he expanded his knowledge of orchestration and composition.... etc
so maybe is the right family!

Hi Suanj -

This definitely looks like it is the right people, but I'm a little confused. In the Ellis Island immigration record, dated 1914, it shows the age for Caterina as 6. Then the marriage information for Caterina shows her marrying Vincenzo in 1920. That would mean she was 12 years old? And the 1920 census information shows her as 11 years old and still living at home. Caterina is not included in the 1930 census, so should I assume that the marriage year is incorrect, maybe it was really 1930?

Thanks for all your help!

Suanj -

Also, another favor if you don't mind. Would you be able to provide me with the 1920 and 1930 census records, and the WWI Draft Registration card? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks -
Joe

Joe, abt Caterina Gargiulo marriage: it are several Caterina Gargiulo married in NY, I no read all grooms, so, because you said that was married at Vincent/Vincenzo, and because the family lived in Manhattan, I posted the record abt a Caterina Gargiulo married at Vincenzo Sicignano, but really cannot be the right Caterina because she was just a child of 12 old in the 1920...! But all the other records seeming abt right family, ok?

Joe, if you lokk the 1930 census, in the family was also Henry Nuzzi, nephew, the word "nephew" is no correct, because in italian language "nipote" is nephew as a well grandson and in same census it are NUZZI Vincent and the wife Caterina; by marriages in Manhattan:
Nuzzi Vincenzo Mar 25 1926 11635 (1926) Manhattan
Gariolo Caterina Mar 25 1926 11635 (1926) Manhattan
I believe that the Caterina maiden name is Gargiulo mispelled in Gariolo; I believe that Caterina Nuzzi is the daughter of Salvatore Gargiulo, and Henry Nuzzi is no the nephew but the grandson of Salvatore...

Salvatore Gargiulo( really born in Vico equense, son of Taddeo Gargiulo and Caterina Gargiulo-same surname of husband) married at Erminia Mascia in Castellammare di Stabia on 7 apr 1907:
marriage act:

Salvatore father was Taddeo, so also Salvatore son had Taddeo first name, changed in Theodore.. the Salvatore parent's names are the same of your Teresa?
