Looking for AITA family Census records

Postby LeandraCat » 11 Apr 2011, 19:50

I have a 1910 Census record for Michele/Michael Aita (45 years old), widower, living in Jersey City with his two daughters: Antonietta (9 years old) and Elisabetta (Alice) (19 years old).

I know that Michele was married and came to the US around 1892. His wife lost a lot of babies. She was pregnant about 10 times, but only these two daughters survived. I think her name was Grace Viola, but I am not 100% sure.

I want to find the 1900 Census for Michele, which hopefully has his wife on there. They should have been living in Jersey City at the time.

Thanks so much!

Have you seen this record index for "Atonia Aita" of Jersey City...
The birthdate is close enough to your Antoinetta (or possibly a child that later died)...
Gives mother as Catarina Trippo...
Don't know Michele's birthdate, so I can't judge if this is close...

Yes, I've seen this...there is also a similar record in 1892, except the mother is Grace Viola...and then in 1895 there was a NJ baby that died with Michele Aita and Grace as the parents...I know that Antonietta's mother died young, because of all these babies dying maybe, and then Michele Aita married his brother's wife Angelina. Angelina was also a widow and had a few kids of her own....this was after 1930 though, I think.

It's possible that the Grace Viola records are wrong, but in this one with Catarina Trippo and in the ones with Grace Viola, Michele Aita's birth year is the same...

Wow! So hard to read, but that could be them! They were already in NJ in 1895...I wonder if Grace Viola was really Viola Gracio? I can't read that one name before Alicia either, that could be a baby they lost....

You have probably seen this record... another Antonetta - born 1892 - probably the child on the 1895 Census...
Mother is listed as Grace Viola...

Notice the misspelling of the last name (Aaita)... may want to use that spelling in a search...

Name: Antonetta Aaita
Gender: Female

Baptism/Christening Place:
Birth Date: 01 Jan 1892

Can you post the 1910 Census? Maybe we can work from the address (if you haven't already tried that) :-)

Sure. In 1910 they lived at 89 or 91 Colgate Street.
Here is the census:
