Is there a chance that they are on the 1911 census. It gives place of birth.

Any chance Carolina had a brother or other relative named Cesare who also came to the UK?

See "Nationality and Naturalisation: Vanni, Cesare, from Italy. Resident in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Certificate 16337 issued 14 August 1928." http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... ssmethod=0

If he is a relative, then the naturalization documents would likely give his place of birth and therefore Carolina's as well.

Searching incoming UK passenger lists turns up many, many, Poli's including a "D Poli" and a "G Poli". I cannot view the records because I do not have international Ancestry . com access. Perhaps someone else can take a look, or you can sign up for a free trial period...

See http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/ss ... x&uidh=000

Also, you may find useful guidance here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... grants.htm
