"Happy Sports"

Postby Joannsalvo » 20 Apr 2011, 00:01

I have a photo of my grandfather with 15 men, I assume all Italian, probably taken about 1904 - 1920. They are all in tuxedo's. In the front of the men seated is a pennant that reads:
Happy Sports

Unfortunately, we did not ask my grandparents about the photo and they are now dead.

My grandfather immigrated from Sicily and settled in Pennsylvania.
I did google it but nothing really to help solve this mystery.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joann

Thanks for posting the photo...

Very handsome group of gentlemen :D

Maybe the image will trigger some recognition for someone at the forum.

You might also want to contact the Historical Society in the area of Pennsylvania where your GF settled. They may have an idea :)

Hi,
That's a great idea, I did not think of that.

The men in the front have top hats and they are all wearing a "ribbon" of some kind.

Legend has it that they were part of the "black hand"?!

Many Thanks,
Joann

State College, Pennsylvania has the nickname "Happy Valley" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_College,_Pennsylvania).

Perhaps something to do with college/university sports?

Throughout the US, there are various towns and counties named "Happy" or "Happy Valley". See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... ppy+county
