Dato Family, Cianciana, Agrigento area of Sicily

Postby ruggiodato » 14 May 2011, 22:25

I am searching for the history of my Grandfather, Giovanni Dato who was born March 31, 1878 in Agrigento, Sicily, possibly in Cianciana. He migrated to Chicago, USA in the early 1900s and died in California in 1971. His name maybe was Diodato but I am not sure. Any ideas???? Any help would be accepted gratefully.

Yes, yes, yes, that is the family. Josephine in 1920 was my mother!!! I am very excited and now I will look futher. Is there anyone who would know the family. Her mother was a Catellano, not a DeLeo that I know of. A mystery!!! Thank you all,

Josephine's mother as referenced on the manifest above is listed, as Italian women were, by her maiden name "DeLeo". "Castellano" would have been Angela's married name, and the last name of her daughter, Josephine...

Hello, Thank you for the info but now I am more confused. My Mother, Josephine was born in Illinois in 1917, her mther was, I THOUGHT, born 1880 in Florence and her maden name was (Giuseppa) Castellano. Forgive my confusion, but where does De Leo come in??? Smometimes things that are obvious flies right over my head. Ray

I stand corrected...had my generations confused.
 :?

Josephine Dato is the daughter of Maria Castellano (married to Dato) who is the daughter of Angela DeLeo (married to Castellano) :-D

The DeLeo is actually the maiden name of Josephine's GRANDMOTHER

I found this thread in a Google search--my great grandfather was a DeLeo, and had some connection to Agrigento. We have a postcard photo of him in a military uniform with the Sicilian name of the town written on the back (Girgenti). His first name was Alphonse, and he was born October 10, 1900. I was wondering if anyone had any more info about this family.
