They Arrived Speaking Dialetto (Dialect)

Postby jennabet » 23 May 2011, 22:22

If the immigrants had arrived speaking the Italian language and not their own regional dialects, it would have been more likely that the spelling of their names might have been recorded properly. My Dialect speaking cousins in Delaware were shocked when I told them that our cousins in Italy with the same name who speak both Dialect AND Italian spell the name differently AND correctly. The sound of Dialect causes one to omit vowels within the body of the name and substitute the wrong vowel for the ending vowel.
