Calabrese Family Bakers

Postby Help » 25 May 2011, 14:20

Does anyone have information on a family with the surname Calabrese who were bakers in the mid to late 1800's in either Salandra or Pomarico?

As you can see here http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html?cognome=CALABRESE, Calabrese is a very, very, common surname in Italy. I suspect that many of them were/are bakers.

Do you have any additional information?

My great grandmother's name was Maria Calabrese & she was born in Salandra, Basilcata, Matera, Italy about 1867. Calabrese was her maiden name. Her daughter (my grandmother) was Angela (Angelina) Maria Calabrese, born in Salandra about 1885. They both died in Toronto, Canada. I would like to know if the family were bakers around this time & who Maria Calabrese's parents were. I have tried looking on microfilm but the records are in very poor condition.

There are people here who can read nearly anything, so consider posting microfilm images if possible.

Better yet, write to Salandra and request your grandmother's birth record in "Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita" format; this will almost certainly be a much clearer copy than the microfilms you are looking at and it should show both of her parent's occupations.

Write only in Italian, or in Italian with English version included; you can find sample letters on this board (try searching) or at:

Birth/marriage/death photocopies of original registry pages are called: Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte. These are more difficult to read but contain lots of additional useful information compared to...

Birth/marriage/death computer-generated extracts are: Estratto Per Riassunto Per Atto Di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte
