Rhode Island - 1900 telephone directory

Postby vanscan » 08 Jun 2011, 06:09

I was doing a search for my grandfathers brother on Ancestry. I found him while doing a search in the telephone directories for Providence Rhode Island:

1898 - he is living on 153 Cedar Street
1899 - he is not listed in the directory
1900 - he is "removed to New York"

What does "removed to New York" mean? If he moved to New York on his own, I don't see why he would even be listed in the Providence telephone directory and labeled with the word "removed"....it just seem very odd to me.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this in the past?

I suspect it means exactly that. Old phone books and old newspapers contain lots of things that seem strange by today's standards.
