Varsalona Family

Postby navasharai » 08 Jun 2011, 07:38

Hi everyone. I'm new here and was so happy to come across this website. I'm very much into genealogy, but have had the most difficult time finding out anything about my Italian ancestors. My grandfather does not know much, unfortunately. All I really know is that his father immigrated to America as a baby.

The last name is Varsalona, but it was changed to Varsolona in the US. I know they came from Sicily in the early 1900s and settled in Jersey City, NJ.

I'm not expecting anyone to be able to really trace my roots, but can anybody tell me about the origin of the name or any information they may know about it? One of the family members passed away and my great-uncle mailed us a huge family tree that I'll eventually look into (it's got to be at least a hundred pages long with various information - it was professionally done), but in the mean time I'd kind of like a starting point of historical information if anybody could provide it. That must be the history major in me speaking. I've been on various genealogical websites, but haven't really found much out. If anyone could point me in any sort of direction, I'd really appreciate it. I managed to trace my English roots back over a thousand years in some cases thanks to the royalty in them, but for my other nationalities I've hit dead-ends!

If you give us some more info on the Varsalona who emigrated from Italy (given name, year of birth, family members), we can probably find his passenger manifest and other documents.

The Varsalona surname appears today in small numbers throughout Italy with the largest concentration in Sicily. See http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html?cognome=VARSALONA

This is a real stretch, but I wonder if the fact that Varsavia is the Italian spelling for Warsaw (Poland) might come into play here.

Thank you for the replies so far! I will ask my mother to give me the documents and I will start going through them. My great-grandfather's name was Daniel, but apparently his real name was Anthony, and he is the one who arrived as a baby. I know he was a boxer here. I *think* his father's name was Salvatore, but I will have to double-check on that one.

You know, that would actually be really interesting. I'm about 60% Polish. :)

Re: Varsalona Family

Postby navasharai » 09 Jun 2011, 00:40

Thank you guys all so much for all of the posts. It helped me to realize some things. When my grandfather's uncle Carmelo passed away recently, a genealogical study was done. Nothing could verify that my great-grandfather Daniel is the same as Anthony, but I know from my grandfather's brother that it's the same person.

Anthony (Daniel) Varsalona was born in Italy in 1899 and passed away in NJ in 1987, so the Anthony and Daniel that were posted are most likely him. His parents were Pietro Varsalona (born 1872) and Rosale di Franca (spelling has changed in every document) was born 1874. Pietro's parents were Salvatore Varsolona and Maria Miritella according to his death certificate.

Also, some of the names of Daniel/Anthony's siblings were familiar to my grandpa. He was the youngest so he doesn't remember all of them, but he did have an Aunt Rosie, and Uncle Gene (Eugene he's assuming) and I know another of the ones I read off he recognized. So odds are that's definitely his family right there.

Not sure if any of that helps at all?

After doing some more research, I'm almost positive they came from San Giovanni Gemini, Agrigento, Sicily. I'm trying to find out Pietro & Rosie's ancestry, but I can't find anything. Any suggestions on where else to look? I've been scouring Ancestry's website for any additional detail and I'm not sure if there are any other places to check out.

you can be very sure that the birth act posted above is abt your Daniele Varsalona ; he was born in San Giovanni Gemini; I searched so much in the San Giovanni Gemini marriage records and I no found it... almost no from 1893-1899, no records....
by LDS microfilms:
Registri dello stato civile di San Giovanni Gemini (Agrigento), 1821-1910 San Giovanni Gemini (Agrigento). Ufficio dello stato civile

Civil registers from the municipality of San Giovanni Gemini in the province of Agrigento. No registers from the years 1862-1878 were filmed. Some registers include an index.
