Borsenna (Borsina, Borsini), Miceli, Anzalone

Postby fmrfabby1 » 12 Jun 2011, 21:15

Giuseppe Borsina ( brn 1893, Sicily ..died 1934 Highland NY) and his wife Caroline-- maiden name Mattina ( brn. 1899, Sicily.. died 1974 Garfield NJ). lived in Manhatten and moved to Highland probably late 1920's. They had 8 children: Ida 1917 - 1939, Katherine (married Ed Simpson of Newburgh) 1919-1997, Angie (married James Fabiano of Kingston ) 1921-2003, Margie (married Ray Coons of Highland ) 1923 -1999, Mike (married Helen Batka and moved to NJ), Nat (married to MaryAnn and later to Augusta. He is still living and resides on Leonta Ct. in Highland.) , Joseph (married to Mary Kayal and moved to Patterson NJ while in the Navy) 1930 -1966 and finally Mary( married to Fred Giordano moved to Garfield NJ) 1932-2002.
Giuseppe, Caroline and family lived on New Paltz Turnpike and then on Main Street in Highland. Caroline worked at a local Inn during the 1950's called Hotel Di Prima ( It is still operating today under a different name). We believe Giuseppe is buried in Highland. We would love a photo of his headstone!! ( We do not live in NY any longer so it's difficult to get to do some research.)
The only mention of Giussepe in any records is my husbands mother's birth certificate where the name is spelled Borsenna (o) and not very clearly. Also we did find a census for Loydd, NY with the family in 1930. The strange thing is the last name was written as Basine and Nat was not mentioned but instead Charlie was written on the line. We would love to get the correct spelling. Edwarda's last name was written Borsenna also in her Immigration Manifest. She was married to Frank Anzalone and they moved to Alabama from what we have researched. We are pretty sure they were brother and sister. (On the ship's manifest it stated that she and her Dad were going to meet her mother Colegegia Miceli) Nat has told us that Giussepe's parents' names were Michele and Kate. The ship's manifest stated that her Dad's name was Michele. We would love to trace the Borsina's back in Sicily if at all possible. Would love to hear from anyone who might have known the family or can find any further info. Thanks...

The names "Borsina" and "Borsenna" do not exist in present day Italy...
http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

When using the "surnames by region" site, the closest spelling to the above names that IS found in Sicily is "Borsellino".

Hi suanj! :-)

Nice find...You beat me to the post!

However, I think Michele Borsemi was a sulfur miner, not a shoemaker...

Hi, suanj :-D

I can see why you read "calzolaio" on Angela's birth act.

Could you take another look at Eduarda's birth record? It still looks like "zolfalaio" (sulfur miner) to me :?

hugs to you, too :-)

Hi tessa, sorry, yes is "solfataro" profession on Angela birth act; and ditto on Eduarda, the handwriting is a bit unreadable especially abt the profession... and on Eduarda the word is "solfataio" and I read "calzolaio", sorry you are right: sulfur miner!
Hugs,

Tessa & suanj,
Just wondering why is Michele's last name different than his daughter Eduarda? Also what is the English translation of Calogera? I am a bit confused. Is Michele Borsemi the same person as Michele Porsenno Esposto? I thought Esposto meant married. From the looks of these documents Eduarda is not related to Giuseppe. But we know an Eduarda Borsina is because she was married to Frank Anzalone and her children supposedly were my mother-in-law's first cousins. The info is interesting and I will try and do some research on these names. Please if you find more keep sending it. Again, I really appreciate the help!

Could you explain what you think the relationship is between Giuseppe Borsina and Eduarda Borsemi? Are you thinking that they are siblings?

Just wondering why is Michele's last name different than his daughter Eduarda?

Eduarda Borsemi is the daughter of Michele Borsemi (according to the birth record). There is no notation of "Esposto" on the birth record. We would have to find a birth record for Michele Borsemi to see if there is a notation there.

ON US Censuses there are gross misspellings of names... Not so much on the ship manifest, but definitely when it is transcribed. My thought is that Borsenna, Porsenna, etc. are all misspellings.

There is a Family Tree for "Joseph Borsino" (1893-1934)on Ancestry.com with wife Caroline Mattina (1899-1973) Is that yours? Owner listed as "craftygal23"
