Meanings of surnames - cognomi

Postby iolanda2 » 25 Jun 2011, 21:52

I am interested in a better understanding of due cognomi.

1. Ghirardelli - my ancestors lived in San Leo ( Papal States ) since about 1756. The name seems to have concentration in Ferrara and Brescia. Found a reference to medieval name of a Lombard - Gerhard, Latinized to Ghirardus.
can you add to the origin of this surname?
how does an old Lombard name find its way into the italian cognomi? descendants? or serfs? molte grazie

2. Semprini - my ancestors lived in San Giovanni in Galilee, near Cesena in 1773. The cognome is common in the areas that include the Bolognese, Ravenna, Forli, Rimini and Pesar. Name probably comes from the Latin nomen Semprinius, an altered form of Sempronius.
How does an old Latin name become a modern italian cognome? descendants/ serfs?

Molte grazie
