Information on Salvatore Demilia (Di Milia) from Calitri

Post by emlowe »

I'm looking for information on Salvatore Demilia who was born on 11 March 1879 in Calitri. He emigrated to the US sometime in 1895, 96, 97 - something like that. Different dates were given on various Censuses (Censii?).

I have located most information about him available from 1900 on in the US from Ancestry and FamilySearch. But finding anything about the family in Italy has been challenging.

Of course, the last name is spelled numerous ways. He signed his WW1 registration card as D'Emilia. And in Calitri it appears the spelling Di Milia is more common.

He married a Maura Maffucci, at this time I do not know if this marriage was in Italy or the US, although current evidence supports the marriage in the USA. In the 1900 Census, he specified he was married for 1 year (so a marriage in 1899) and listed his immigration date as 1896.

Thanks for reading!

Could this be the manifest for your Salvatore?

Arriving NY 1895 on SS Saale
Age 16 (puts DOB at about 1879)

Unfortunately, these early manifests have little information. But you'll notice that he is traveling with 4 passengers named "Maffucci", and one is a shoemaker... :-)

Yes, I think that is the most likely passenger list. I spent some time looking into those Maffucci's but nothing immediately popped out.

Pasquale Maffucci was one of the travelers on the above manifest. He was 25 and a shoemaker. Looks like his wife Vincenza and son Pasquale were traveling with him. Also listed is Pasquale Maffucci, 50. Maybe the father/grandfather. Still looking for a connection to "Maura Maffucci" the wife of Salvatore Demilia. Interesting that Salvatore became a shoemaker... :-)

Maybe this is Pasquale in the 1889, 1890 Brooklyn Directory

Brooklyn, New York Directories, 1888-1890
about Pasquale Maffucci
Name: Pasquale Maffucci
Location 2: 77 Graham avenue
Occupation: shoemkr.
Year: 1889, 1890
City: Brooklyn
State: NY
