Buonafede (Bonafede) & Nuccio-----hit a dead end!

Postby rbuonafede » 19 Aug 2011, 23:24

I have been researching the Buonafede side in hopes of possibly one day pursuing dual citizenship! While I have come across a great deal of information, I have not been able to locate any further information for birth and marriage of my husband’s great grandparents.

His grandpa was Samuel (Salvatore) Buonafede born in Chicago on 22 January 1916 or 20 Nov 1916 or 1915 I have come across various records however the official birth certificate lists Jan. 22 1916.

His parents were both born in Italy. His father was Calcidonia Buonafede--Birth 28 Jan 1887 in Petralia Soprana, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy
Death 19 Jul 1968 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States of America and I believe he came over July 12, 1912. It appears as though his parents were named Nunziata and Vincenzio.

His wife (Sam’s Mother) was Maria Buonafede (Nuccio) Birth 1896 in Mezzojuso, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy
Death 26 Mar 1936 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States .

She came over March 18, 1913 with her parents and her & Calcidonia’s daughter Nunzia- who was born in 1912 in Mezzojuso, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy and Death 18 Jun 1913 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States

Maria’s parents were Salvatore Nuccio Birth 1861 in Campofelice di Roccella, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy and Rosa Terranella Birth 1863 in Campofelice di Roccella, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy

At this point I am trying to confirm the cities of birth for Calcidonia and Maria. I need to locate marriage and birth certificates. I have tried the microfilms but did not have much luck. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Why not just write to Petralia Soprana and request Calcidonia's birth and (possible) marriage records. Calcidonia? Unusual name, and with a feminine "a" ending.

I found two family tree records at ancestry.com for Calcidonia/o which place the date of birth at October 22, 1888 based on this social security death index:

Social Security Death Index about Calsidonio Buonafede
Name: Calsidonio Buonafede
SSN: 349-03-2343
Last Residence: 60614 Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States of America
Born: 22 Oct 1888
Died: Jul 1968
State (Year) SSN issued: Illinois (Before 1951)

One of these family trees puts Calcedonia/o's place of birth as Mezzojuso, the same as his wife, Maria Nuccio.

I assume you have seen this naturalization index card:

Click once to enlarge; click again for maximum magnification.

Since you will need the naturalization documents for your jure sanguinis case anyway, you should go ahead and order copies. They will give his correct place and date of birth, the places and dates of birth of his wife and children, the date he arrived in the US and the name of the ship, and so on.

Actually, I would begin with the naturalization papers as they should clear up any questions concerning the places of birth for Calcidonia and Maria.

Also, since you seem to have detailed info on daughter Nunzia's place and date of birth, you can write the comune to request a copy of her birth act. Be sure to ask for "copia integrale" format, as this should contain the ages and places of birth for both parents as well as the name of Calcidonia's father. You can find various letter templates, or use this one:

22 agosto 2011 [agosto is August; month names in italian are written lower case]

[your address]

STATI UNITI D'AMERICA - USA

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Mezzojuso
Piazza Umberto I, 5
90030 Mezzojuso PA
ITALY

Egregi Signori,

Mi chiamo [your name here], ed abito negli Stati Uniti all'indirizzo sopradetto.

Vi scrivo affinché mi aiutiate a reperire:

* Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita

per il mio prozia: prozia = great-aunt

* BUONAFEDE NUNZIA nato nel Comune di Mezzojuso, in data 1912, paternità CALCIDONIA, maternità NUCCIO MARIA

Vi prego di farmi sapere quanto dovuto per il servizio e per i costi di spedizione.

Distinti saluti,

[your signature]

Birth/marriage/death photocopies of original registry pages are called: Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte. These are more difficult to read but contain lots of additional useful information compared to...

Birth/marriage/death computer-generated (sometimes hand-written) extracts are: Estratto Per Riassunto Per Atto Di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte

Most comuni do not charge for these documents. Do send a large, self-addressed (but not stamped) envelope if possible; be sure to put "STATI UNITI D'AMERICA - USA" in the final line of your address. It is also a good idea to include a copy of your ID (driver's license, for example) as some comuni will not process requests without it.

Alternately, you can try emailing the request to comunemezzojuso@libero.it - some comuni respond to emails; others not so much.

Thank you for the information that is very helpful! I did see that naturalization record but was not sure if it was his or not. The reason I was thrown off a little is due to the fact that I came across a ship manifest that shows his birth place as petrolia sop. Using my best ability to read the manifest it appears as though he is joining a nuccio in Chicago which would make sense. However, it would probably make the most sense for him and Maria to be from the same town. Any thoughts? Also, how could the death record have such a different date?

Thanks a bunch!

One other piece of information that I came across and am I little confused about:

ame: Maria Buonafide
Titles and Terms (original):
Death Date: 26 Mar 1936
Death Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Gender: Female
Marital Status:
Race or Color:
Age: 33
Estimated Birth Year: 1903
Birth Date: 31 May 1902
Birthplace: Campofilicia, Italy
Father: Salvatore Nuccio
Father's Titles and Terms (original):
Father's Birth Place: Campofilicia, Italy
Mother: Rose Terrinelli
Mother's Titles and Terms (original):
Mother's Birth Place: Campofilicia, Italy
Occupation: Housewife
Residence: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Street Address:
Spouse: Carl Buonafide
Spouse's Titles and Terms (original):
Spouse's Birthplace:
Burial Date: 28 Mar 1936
Burial Place: Hillside, Cook, Illinois

I know for a fact that this is my great-grandmother and the death date is correct, but I am wondering how accurate the birth date may be.

How certain are you that Maria's birthplace is Campofelice di Rocella, and not Campofelice di Fitalia? We are having a discussion of these two locations at [url]http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/topic23169.html.

(My great grandmother Anna Terranella listed her birthplace as Campofelice, and like you, I assume she was referring to what is now C. di Roccella.)

I just found Anna Terranella's marriage record online, and for the first time, the exact Campofelice is specified: Campofelice di Fitalia!

rbuonafede, you may wish to consider searching that particular Campofelice, instead of C. di Roccelle.

I am not 100% sure on which Campofelice, I have gone back and forth. Do you have a large family tree going yet? I'm wondering if there is any relation to the Rosa Terranella from my family. Where did you end up finding the marriage certificate?

I'm sorry to say I don't have much on the Terranella line in Sicily itself. My great grandmother Anna Terranella was only one or two when she came to Louisiana in 1892 with her father, Salvatore Terranella, and mother, Josephine Randazzo, as well as her brother, Mariano.

Eventually they found their way to 1157 Milton Ave, Chicago, which seemed to be a destination for various Terrenella family members (interestingly, the 1910 census indicates they lived next door to a family headed by "Rosillia Terrinella," a 39-year-old widow). I understand that a fairly large contingent of Terrenellas ended up in Texas.

As for the marriage record, it was in the Catholic Church records for Chicago that have just been posted on Family Search.

I'm planning on ordering the films for Campofelice di Fitalia to see if I can find my Terranella relatives there, and I'd be glad to look for yours as well.

I emailed Campofelice Di Rocella and they came back with no records so I am def. wondering about Camopfelice di Fitalia now. If there is any way you can look at the records you order from Fitalia that would be awesome and very much appreciated!! All I have on Rosa Terranella is that she came over Nov. 1912 with her husband Salvatore Nuccio. She was born in 1863 and died in Chicago in 1932. I know for sure they had a daughter Maria Rosa who was born about May 1896 in Campofelice and died in Chicago in 1936. They also had a son Lucciano who was also born in Campofelice Aug. 1885 and died in 1964 in Chicago as well.

This morning i worked on your family quest and i found a lot of useful information(i hope).

1) About Rosa Terranella:
. a) According to Ellis Island, Rosa(50y), living on Mezzoiuso at that time, departed on 18 mar 1913 to find his son Luciano, with his husband Salvatore(52y) and his son Nicolino(8y).
. b) According to Illinois Death Records, a Rosa Nuccio (70y), wife of Salvatore, dead on 22 jun 1932. Her parents were Santo Terranella e Maria Cutaia.

2) About Luciano Nuccio
. a) According to Ellis Island, Luciano(1885),son of Salvatore, departed on 1 sep 1907, to find his uncle Francesco Terranella(v.3)
. b) According to Illinois Naturalization Records, Luciano, living at 927 Cambridge Avenue, Chicago, was naturalized on 27 feb 1941, and the witness are Anthony Manno and Joseph F. Baranno.
. c) According to Illinois Birth and Death Records, Luciano could be married Giovannina Manno(same surname of Nat.Witness) and they had a son Rosario, born on 9 Oct 1916 and dead on 13 Oct 1918.

3) About Francesco Taranella(Rosa's brother)
. a) According to Ellis Island, Francesco(1880), son of Maria Cutaia, living in Mezzoiuso, departed on 18 mar 1913 to find his brother in law Salvatore Nuccio.

. c) Maybe they aren't the same family, but in 1930 Census there's a Frank Tarranala, born 1880 in Italy, immigration 1901, married with Josephine Tarranala, born 1892 in Louisiana. Their son are:
. Mary Tarranala, born 1909 in Illinois

For now my research stop there. I wish that it'will be useful for your work.
