Antonino Costantino and Maria D'Agostino

Postby heathergreen » 21 Aug 2011, 19:15

I've searched this board and haven't found the information on this couple so I figured I'd post and see if anyone knows anything.

Antonino Costantino and his wife Maria D'Agostino were born in Italy and I've read that they emigrated to the US in 1880 or mid to late 1870's from Cicily to MA. One of their children was Andrew Costantino who married Mary Casassa. One of their children was Andriana Pauline Costantino. She was my great great grandmother.

I'm trying to find out who Antonino Costantino's parents were and who Maria D'Agostino's parents were. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello heathergreen! Welcome to the forum :-)

To find the names of Antonio Costantino and Maria D'Agostino's parents, it will be necessary to discover the EXACT town in Sicily where they were born.

Often it helps to work backwards from Census records and immigration records. To do that, it would be helpful if you could provide some details :-)

You say your GGM was Adriana Pauline Costantino.
Can you provide her approx. year of birth?
Was she born in USA or in Italy?
What was her husband and her children's names?
Where did they live in the US?
When Antonio and Maria immigrated (in late 1870's or early 1880's) where did they live in US?

ANY and ALL clues will help us search for your ancestors...

Andriana was born in the USA Feb 1901 and died in 1977 in Saugus, MA

What was her husband and her children's names?
Andriana never married but she had a set of twins, Joseph and Mary. Joseph is my grandfather. She NEVER told anyone what the name of the father was.

Where did they live in the US?
Saugus, MA. Pretty much the whole family, all of Andriana's siblings lived in Saugus.

When Antonio and Maria immigrated (in late 1870's or early 1880's) where did they live in US?
I know they came to MA, I assume Boston and I assume they lived in Saugus as well.

Antonino and Maria were (I believe) from Messina, Cicily, Italy.

Thanks for the update :-)

We'll see what we can find!

BTW - do you have an approx. year of birth and/or death for Antonio and Maria?
And do you know what kind of work Antonio did?
Were Antonio and Maria married in Italy? Were any of the children born in Italy?

:D

I don't have any birth or death years for Antonino or Maria (I saw some information online that mentioned they emigrated to the US in 1880). I recently found some information on the genforum that jived with what I had (although the person who posted it mentions Antonino and Maria emigrating to the US in mid to late 1870's). I tried to contact the lady that had posted it because I think I'm actually related to her (her email address was invalid and it bounced back) and also replied to her post but she had posted the information in 2005 and I'm not sure if I'll hear back from her or not. This was the first time in years that my father and I had found out the names of his grandfather's (Andrew Costantino) parents, so this was big breakthrough to find just the names of Antonino and Maria :) I believe Andrew was born in Messina and came over with his parents to the US, I'm not sure how many of his other siblings came as well or were born here.

I have further lineage information from Andrew (son of Antonino and Maria), his wife Mary Casassa and their children (my grandmother Andriana and great aunts) if you need any of that.

The interesting thing is... my maiden name should not be Costantino. Andriana had twins out of wedlock (my grandfather Joseph and his sister Mary) and she NEVER revealed who the father was (there were rumors of the name, 'Smith', but you know how that goes). So we don't know what the last name would actually be.

Could this be the family in the 1920 Census in Suagus?
Age is right for Andriana (Adrina in the Census)... misspellings are common.

Don't be confused by the "Antonia" at the top. I found the census under her name. :)

It looks like Head of Household is Andrew age 71. This would put the DOB about 1850?
Father Antonio would have been born anywhere from 1810-1830 ABOUT...
So if the Antonio Costantino family arrived in 1870's or 1880's... Andrew would have been in his 20's or 30's --- already married or not? Difference in age from his Wife Mary is about 21 years. And May looks to have been about 16 when first child was born.

What are your thoughts? Do the other names fit in the family?

I know you aren't looking for info on the CASSASA family... but

Possible 1880 Census for Mary Cassasa
Father Andrew/Andrea is correct
Date of birth for Mary/Maria is consistent with the 1920 Census

1880 United States Federal Census
about Mary Cassasa
Name: Mary Cassasa
Home in 1880: Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts
Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Ita
Relation to Head of Household: Dau (Daughter)
Father's name: Andrew Cassasa
Father's birthplace: Ita
Mother's name: Theresa Cassasa
Mother's birthplace: Ita
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: At School
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Female
Name Age
Andrew Cassasa 32
Theresa Cassasa 35
Mary Cassasa 10
Tina Cassasa 4
Annie Cassasa 2

According to this Census (if it IS your Mary) she was born in Italy. Her sister Tina was born in Massachusetts 6 years later. Sooo... if you want to look for the immigration records for Maria/Mary and family - target time - 1870-1876

BTW - I'm wondering if Andrea/Andrew Costantino immigrated alone and not with his parents? Your thoughts?

Tessa, my dad should be coming to my house tomorrow and we're going to sit down and go through all the information and I'll reply to you then. I'm actually interested in the Cassasa family as well and did not have parents listed for Mary yet :)

All that information was amazing, we were able to add some more names to the family tree, names we hadn't had before! Thank you SO much :D

One thing my dad has always had his heart set on was finding out the name of the ship that Antonino and Maria came to America on. According to a census I found ,it says they emigrated in 1880. But I can't find anything on a ship coming in that year to Boston.

While it's more likely that they did indeed arrive in Boston Harbor... it is not unlikely that they arrived in another port (like NY) and then traveled to Boston. This was common.

It's tough finding manifests for those early years, and when you do they hold so little information that you sometimes can't even be sure it is your ancestor.

But we'll continue to search :D

Glad you and your Dad enjoyed the records together!

Here is a site that may be a good resource

Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild

http://www.immigrantships.net/index2.html

List ships by date, port of arrival and departure, captain, etc.
May take some searching ship by ship, line by line (that is how I found my great-grandmother's manifest after no hits on Ancestry etc.)

And another :-)

Massachusetts Archives - Passenger Lists (1848-1891)

http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcsrch/ ... tents.html

Good luck...
